I'm heading to the states next week and was wondering if I buy a GPS unit for the car over there will it work over here? Do you just upload maps from here? I tried googling/searching boards as I know there was a thread on it but could'nt find anything.

Well the GPS part will work anywhere, thats the whole idea behind it.

As for software, depending on the brandname you can prob buy map packs for europe for it and update it.

Some systems allow you to scan your own maps. this thread might have more info for you.

cheers...had a look at that link but my head is spinning. I have a XDA 1 so what exactly do I need to get up and running. Reading that link it seems you need a receiver and discs with maps is that right? Sorry if I sound like a gombeen!

yep you need a receiver to get GPS data to determine your position and direction etc.

And then software to display this info on a map, to plan routes etc.
