    Both

    ^Both.

One of the greatest lyricists of our time.

    Religions fall
    Children shelled ...children shelled ?
    That’s all very well,
But would you please keep the noise down low ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

Definitely both. There's times when I think his lyrics can never be topped and other times when I wish he'd cheer up. Then there's times when he does both and I don't know what to think.

"I know its over" is the only song that I think is a bit of a downer, great song all the same. Most of his lyrics I find amusing.

Two icy-cold hands conducting the way
It’s the eskimo blood in my veins
    Amid concrete and clay
    And general decay
Nature must still find a way
So ignore all the codes of the day
    Let your juvenile influences sway
This way and that way (this way)
This way and that way (this way)
    God, how sex implores you
    To let yourself lose yourself

Southpaw grammer crossed the line into moany, the rest of the lyrics may contain gripes, but they are legitamite.

i love all the stuff he did with the smiths but i have to say, i think some of his best stuff is on you are the quarry.
not forgetting songs like you're the one for me fatty and last of the international playboys.

i find it very interesting how much some people despise and some people adore the man. he is truly a love him or hate him charachter it seems

It's not like you can separate a from b here. The reason he's a legend is because while he's a fabulous lyricist, he has a distinguishable personality [even if that IS a moany one]. Which is criminally rare in his field of work [and especially as he's moany, pessimistic & highly sarcastic in contrast to the Scientologists he lives amongst].

I didn't HATE 'You Are the Quarry' or anything, but I'd disagree if you told me it had some of his best work so far. I think he finds working easy, and it's easy for him to release work now and have it instantly praised. Ten years ago that was not the case [we mistakenly thought he was the BNP, long story] and he's making good use of his present popularity. That said, there were a few good-but-not-great pop tunes on the album & bejaysus isn't that what he's good for these days? What he's doing is widely believed to be GOOD ENOUGH, a belief supported by the fact that he altered the face of celebrity 20 yrs ago anyhow.... Why demand anything more from the guy?

But see, ya love Morrissey because he's moany-his songs are exactly what the average person moans about. And the fact that many more of his other songs are extremely witty and sarchastic just makes me (and many others) love him evenmore...:)

    lazy dykes
    america is not the world
    irish blood english heart
first of the gang to die are the weakest IMO.

    Come back to Camden
    I have forgiven jesus
    Let Me Kiss You
You KNow it could never last

stand up to the best of his work, again IMO.

best lyricist of all time. forget your dylans and co , he is the man.

a bit of colum A, a bit of column B.

Good stuff tho....sigh. Can't beat Christy doing a cover of America tho, classic.

As for surpassing Dylan-c'mon now lads, he's good, but he's not that good. Dylan has written a load of tripe, but he has some fecking jems in their that Morrissey will not beat. Can you ever see Morrissey writting a decent "love song" (i hate that term)? Dylan is a whole different level to Morrissey imho. Don't get me wrong I love him and all, but Dylan is up there on his pedestal

    *John2 presents an interlude*

I went to see Corpse Bride tonight and the bad guy in it looks a lot like Morrissey. I've tried to google for pictures of him but no dice.

    *resume thread*

The man is a Genius, and I would consider him to be up there with dylan, Although Dylan had more of a movement behind him (hippies) than Morrissey (grumpy people) :p

Is there anyone who dislikes his lyrics? I don't think I know anyone who (regardless of what they make of the music) doesn't appreciate his lyrical gift.

he is easily the best lyricist of all time, better than dylan.

Morrissey BETTER than Dylan? I never got that approach...

Why does it have to be a competition? Can't they just be different?!

    irish blood english heart

These are probably the two best songs on the album, or near enough.

Far superior to Dylan I agree.

As for love songs try these

    Is it really so strange
    ask
First of the gang to die
    Please please please....
    my love life
    girlfriend in a coma
    back to the old house

Plus he writes about much more interesting subject matter than just straight forward love songs.
    Including:
    football hooligans,
    serial killers,
    vegetarianism,
    his own ex-fans,
    schools/education,
tha fact that, er, some girls are bigger than others.

the fact that alot think moz is better than bob lyrically maybe cos moz is english and maybe we can relate more to him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭blu_sonic

i love moz, i'm a true fan boy of his, i totally love zimmi too so its a tough one i think moz is more relevent to today and to my life, but to say he's better is a true toughie

i think how could anybody possibly know how i feel is the stand out track on YATQ, to answer he is a moan but a genius moaner thats why he's great

    also songs on:
    abortion
