if you are on the domain does it not include it in your standard mounts?

other than that it should be available via \\ntserver-usr\get

address for that server is ntserver-usr.tcd.ie

It currently isn't possible to access the GET folder from the Open Network (i.e. wlan and sre) or from Computer Science. One way would be to use a Netsoc account to access it and then transfer it to your system via WinSCP. I did something similar myself last year.

As for sharing folders with others - its probably possible by messing with permissions although certainly not advisable. Depending on what you want to do Netsoc can provide you with a website, which would be accessible from student res.

Can you explain that a bit more? I'm trying to add my filestorage so it shows up in My Computer (on my regular, non-college account on my laptop) but I don't know how. Is it possible, and how do you do it?

uhhh i'll give some more complete instructions later, though if they have changed the system it won't work too well.....(i ain't been on the tcd lan in quite a while now)

Is there any chance of all these techie questions being put together in one stickie?

Or, could a sub forum of the TCD forum be created for them (in the same way as the television forum has lost and the like sub forums)?

or they could, you know, use the PROPER forums on boards....

in fairness most of the techie questions are pretty specific to tcd...

    anyway as i promised....
Go start -> Run and type :

    net use o: \\ntserver-usr\get /USER:<tcd username? /PERSISTENT:YES <tcd password>

Not quite. As he's using a local user account the domain it'll try will be that of the local computer. More likely to work is:

    net use * \\ntserver-usr.tcd.ie\get /USER:COLLEGE\<tcd username> /PERSISTENT:YES <tcd password>

I'd also suggest using the command promt (cmd) so that you'll see any error messages that appear.

since he's on the domain anyway and using his tcd login it should automatically include the college no?

    Did you see this?
My Computer (on my regular, non-college account on my laptop)

This implies that he's probably using LAPTOP\Administrator (or equivilent). Hence it'll try to auth as LAPTOP\issusername if memory serves.

    Yep that's right..well it's more like LAPTOP\ronan.

I tried both commands, I got a system error 53 - The network path was not found.

Did isservices change the protocol slightly? I remember something new about having like a student<x> (where x is the first initial of your college username) folder before you could get to your own particular one..

Actually, I'm not sure how exactly I did it (something to do with mapping a folder or something) but it's working now! Thanks for the help though.

You're thinking of your userspace which is \\ntserver-quota\studentX. Its been like that since I started college at least.

Assuming you're doing it from student res - I think error 53 is correct as ntserver-usr is firewalled off.

There was a switch to ADS that started about 9 months back. This was the change from the TCD.IE domain to COLLEGE domain. This change is still ongoing, although virtually everything is COLLEGE now. This should however have no effect on this problem.

Some of ye didn't seem to read this the first time round.

To the best of my knowledge, yes. It works from Maths anyway.

Also from time to time CS will completely block CIFS/SMB from the rest of college, usual during periods of high virus activity.
