packet radio, guerilla networking

    'Lo all,

On my travels, I happened to notice that ham radio units like the Yaesu FT-1500M http://www.yaesu.com/amateur/ft1500m.html allow packet radio at 9600bps. Pretty slow, yes ... but the unit is cheap at $159.

However, further hunting have turned up 56k packet radio kit at http://www.wa4dsy.net/56kb/56kstation.html and a 64k standard at http://ssmodem.greamerica.com/2000-64k.html

As they're radios, the range on these things is big (30miles), and you can get the 56k solution up and running for under £1000.

Any idea if I'm completely up the wrong tree here? Anybody in East Cork interested in having a go with this stuff? Are there licencing issues?

Any bandwidth alternative is worth looking into.

Have you got prices for the 64k option ?

Licencing would be a factor. Maybe someone in the ODTR could let you know ? Or any ham radio experts.

The ODTR site is down so I can't check anything. However the 64k option has a frequency range of 2.404 to 2.478 GHz. The 2.4GHz band is used for wireless networking without a license so I doubt the ODTR would mind. However, as it is more a HAM radio thing would you need to personally get a license as a HAM radio operator? Could be an interesting thing in itself!

A friend of mine got one of those Licenses years ago. I know nothing about it, but I do remember he had to study and take an exam.
Seems a lot of trouble to go trough just to get some bandwidth!!
(now that I think of it he may have failed the exam, it was a long time ago and I have sort of lost touch with him )
