    Lew

Whenever I try to play DVD's + mp3's etc I get very poor performance. The sound is choppy and the system gets pretty slow. I've also noticed it slower to boot up. I even get garbled sound from the login chime (after putting in username/password etc)

PC here is 3.0Ghz 1Gig RAM Win XP Home. Best I can see there are no viruses on this system. Bar reformatting the HD I'm not sure where to start looking!

Do you get the same distortion when using headphones?

    Re-install the audio card driver.
Also, check through/disable startup items in MSCONFIG

made any changes to the soft/hard-ware config recently?

Failing that: XP System Restore,if it's only recent :)

    Yes

    Will do,
    All set to default

    nope

Turned off system restore (normally do, to help against viruses etc).

Looks like twill have to be a reformat - thank god the drive is properly partitioned...

Is it a Dell with Nvidia 6800 video card. If so lots of other people with the same problem (check Dell forums to see posts on the subject).
