Holiday ideas for young couple

I'm not big into holidays. I've gone on about four in my life (not including Gaeltachts). I dunno, I guess I like to stay at home and keep everything in my life running smoothly.

Anyway, I'm 18 and next summer myself and the girlfriend, 17, are heading away on our first holiday together. We're not looking to go somewhere like Ibiza or Crete, cus neither of us are MAD into the whole crazy, party scene (well, as a couple. I am in the right situation, but that's generally when I'm out with the lads), but we want somewhere where we can have a nice, relaxing holiday, plenty of nice food, plenty of places to shop (for her, I couldn't really give a **** about that) etc.

At the same time, we want to go to a young-ish destination. Somewhere where there's people of around our own age (though a tad bit older, I honestly cannot stand the PLC crowd) looking for a similar trip. Like we want a bit of nightlife as well as the above, a few pubs and clubs to go to would be perfect. Sounds awful, but we don't want to be stuck out there with a bunch of ould wans just as much as we don't want to be stuck with a bunch of kids who've just been let off the leash.

Anyway if there's anyone who can make any recommendations, it would be greatly appreciated as it's getting too late to put off looking now. Please feel free to recommend any hotels or whatever you've gone to personally, that would be fantastic.

    Thanks again!

Salzburg in Austria sounds like it might suit. Went there last August with the other half and a few mates and had a great time. It`s a beauitful city, with loads of sightseeing (Mozart`s home town, foot of the alps), lots of cafes and restaurants for good, reasonably priced food. And The Sound Of Music was filmed there, so if she`s into that there`s day tours etc. And then there`s romantic cruises down the river at night time, strolls through the immaculate gardens etc.

Night-life-wise, didn`t go to any clubs, but there`s a few irish bars (Murphy`s Law is good, it`s actually built into a cliff, so the back of the bar is just a rock face), and there`s another one popular with young people with a pretty busy dancefloor. Nightlife is mostly good for wining and dining rather than dancing, I`d say though.

We stayed in a youth hostel - because if you`re like me, you won`t be spending much time in your room - and it was fine. Good food, clean and central, and a nice bar too. Can`t ask for much more!

We flew with Ryanair from Stanstead, but they may go direct from Dublin now, as does Aer Lingus.

You sound like you might be a bit too mature for your age... but shure not to worry...

If you "want somewhere where we can have a nice, relaxing holiday, plenty of nice food, plenty of places to shop (for her, I couldn't really give a **** about that) etc."

you're gona have to look around quite a bit...
In my experience any of the package hols to the likes of the canaries and whatnot, will not be able to provide you with a relaxing hol with nice food ... as I'd consider relaxing to be having air-con, and nice food to be at least edible... Of course you can get places with air-con, so at the very least get that, but the food in general is sh!te, and anyone who tells you otherwise has no taste :D

So I suggest you go to a city!

Now I've come to these conclusions as I've had those sun holiday things, and while had a decent enough time, they weren't for me... but I still think you should experience one of them just for life-experience...

As a possible nicer sun-holiday destination, try Dubrovnik in Croatia, wel at least look into it...

City wise... shure you should try over the years to get to all the gud uns in europe, so it doesn't really matter where you begin..

Salzburg as suggested above sounds nice enough
Maybe try Vienna, if you fancy Austria
Prague or budapest if you want cheaper times
    Paris if you're loaded
Barcelona ... now that's a place I wanna go to soon

Why not spend a few days in Salou and a few days in Barcelona?

If its a package type holiday you're looking for I would definitely agree with Lanzarote. Nice scenery, great weather, easy to get a reasonable deal. The food is great, shopping is good, and the nightlife is there without being too in your face. I went earlier this year with my boyfriend and we had a great time. We went out every night, but lots of people we met there were just having a relaxing holiday, and found that there were lots of places to go for a quiet drink or a game of pool.

Thanks to everybody who's posted so far. It's given us a lot to chew on and helped a TON. Really appreciate it, though by all means if anyone else has a suggestion I'd love to hear it.

My all time favourite holiday destination has to be Feurteventura, it is the largest Canary island but it is the least developed, there are two main resorts, one is Correlljo (mainly irish uk) and the other is Calenta De Feuste(mainly german). Correlljo is livelier. There are loads of watersports activities avaliable if thats what you're in to. Ive been there three times now with BoyF we both surf so we love it there and some restaurants are nice, if you go i can post the names of the resttaurnat that are worth a visit, its young place lots of people on watersport holidays there is amain street in correlljo with lots of pubs and only one night club wakiki its on the beach though and great fun. its a pretty laid back place the scenery is very beautiful, you can find a beach and have it all to yourself for the day! pretty cool. shopping wise there is a mango and bennetton and lots of lil shops and 10 surf shops, you can also get the ferry to lanzorete (sp, sorry) it takes 30 mins and go shopping there in Peurto Del Carmen for the day!
