From what I heard, it is 10 membership but you get 20 back in chips - this may have changed, though. Your right about the fingerprinting as it is the company that I work for that is involved in providing the solution. It may be messy but if the casino is nice enough and the games are good enough, surely it will be worthwhile.

Now I wonder if Tom Murphy will be boycotting this over the fingerprinting issue - he did say that he wouldn't go the the USA for the same reasons but then he went to Vegas ;-)

That would be OK ........ I suppose, but what's the point????:confused:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 104 ✭✭Tourneque

    1) They can say they have 'x' amount of members

    2) Probably over half of the members will lose the 20 quite quickly

.. it's probably like the Fitz promotion where although you got a $10 chip, it was 'special' and you had to bet it all at once or something like that..

In a casino its a great idea. For the owners that is ;)

AFAIK this Fitz promotion is still going on, I went in with a mate and signed him up last Friday and asked for the €10 sign-up bonus for him and he got it.....

why do they want my fingerprints?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,401 ✭✭✭jtsuited

    because they're watching you mark!

maybe they'll find out who it was that broke into my gaff the other night and stole my poker diary

Its an extra level of security - Membership Card (proximity) +fingerprint will give you access.
There is no way that you can use somebody else's card to get into the membership area unless of course, you cut off their finger and use that with the card.

Also, the fingerprints are totally secure, there is no way that they can take your fingerprints and link them up to any other system, if that is what you are worried about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,881 ✭✭✭bohsman

So what is going to be so special about the place that we need to go through more stringent security than most European borders? Theres a dozen or so casinos that wont charge you entry fees or fingerprint you, plenty that will give you free drink even if youre not a high roller.

If they want the Dublin Poker community to move over (judging by 13 poker tables I would assume they do) theyve certainly gotten off to a bad start.
I know Tom was at the opening along with Martin O Neill Sean Connery and some golfer, Ill be interested to read his report

This whole deeley really smacks of a type of country club snobbery!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 375 ✭✭pokertroll

I guess you need to find out yourself if it is special or not.
The main reason would be that DD owns both our company and the Sporting Emporium. To be honest, we normally stick to much bigger border security type projects and this one was a once off for our sister company.

I wouldn't consider it snobbery. On the contrary, they are treating everybody equally, Dermot is getting fingerprinted himself and does not insist on getting special treatment. It is no different to getting your photograph taken, just a lot more secure.

Try out the Casino - you'll be very impressed.

The free drink is not restricted to high rollers AFAIK.

The emporium is in a very busy part of town and i reckon the membership fee will stop any old joe bloggs walking in, which I am in favour of

    The tourny schedule is interesting!

I see a problem. A bit pissed, carrying loads of cash back to my car parked miles away in Merrion Square. Flashback - I've done that before (minus the cash) .

    Hey Mark,

Is it Daon you work for?

I met them 4 or 5 years ago in previous job around bio-metrics. I think Dermot Desmond is an investor as well.
The 'fingerprint' system might be seen as country club snobbery now, but by the end of the decade, we'll all be paying our bills and shopping like this, (even buying Doc's pints).

No more need for Laser cards, they'll just hook up your fingerprint to your bank account, loyalty cards you name it, and away you go !!

Get ready for a lot of rich fingerless people in the future then, especially in Colombia. The cartels could be playing second fiddle to the finger bandits.

Its on Anne's lane, which is between Dawson Street and Grafton Street very close to St. Stephen's Green shopping center.

Personally I have no problem with fingerprinting or whatever way they like to do it. I like the schedule and its obvious they have done their homework, as they seem to know which nights there is a niche. I will certainly give it a whirl. It also means I can get the Luas in and have a few jars which I enjoy whilst playing poker. The more choices the better, I reckon.

I've just been into it and got a tour of the place. Very plush I have to say. They've about 8/9 tables at the moment on the 2nd floor, all very well spaced out and the tour guide said they might add a few more if needed. They have all the other casino games on the first floor.

150 freezout on Tuesday will be a tempter now and then I'd say, and a double chance on Weds and Thurs sounds good to me. Def worth checking out in my opinion. Think i'll stick to playing sober though (which on the rare occasion I ignore my own advice i regret it). Willpower willpower willpow......oh never mind, I'll have a Heineken.

I think your right Culchie, I spoke to Daon years ago re: An application server and Dernot Desomd was mentioned as an invetor - they were called Bio-tech before but could be wrong...

My first night in the fitz I bet the €10 on red or black 9 times in a row and won. That was following a € 800 win at the Th/OM on a sat night.

Guess my luck was in that night, wouldnat have bet on rouleete only for the free token so i say the more free tokens the better

If youre trying to imply that pokertroll is DD you may well be right.

I hear he was in the Fitz in disguise recently. Of course with fingerprints he wouldnt have been able to fake his name

Dermot desmond funded the development of the finger printing technology....not a bad way to publicise your product I guess...throw it in there with a multi million casino launch...fair play, ive no problem with it.

I think €10 membership is grand, despite the fact you get double back as long as you gamble it...but, when in Rome... etc.

Plus isn't it just great to have a top quality casino? I'd like to know more about the free booze though??? Can anyone clarify this?

I reckon drinks will be complementary for tourneys and on the VIP lounge. Nothing else.

Free booze is to anyone in the club. you cannot drink at the table whilst playing poker. I have to say I was very impressed with the set up and they are definately not just catering for the well off. Min bets on BJ are €3 although you can play in the salon privee for upto 10k a hand. Most Fitz/Merrion regulars will feel right at home as most of the staff are from those two clubs!

I will have to see this to believe it! If this is the case what is stop a few lads starting their Friday/Saturday night drinking session with some "free" beers in the "new casino thingy". Pay €10 entry, press your index fingure here and free booze as long as you NOT playing - the trinity students (those over 21) will run amuck!!!;)

I am sure there will be a common sense ruling made by the floor if people are taking advantage but if you play there you will get free booze. It works in Vegas so why not here? Also you can not get a full pint. Draught will only be served by the glass. Guinness and Lager will be available on draught from next week. The finger food they bring around is also yummy.

I don't see the Fitz being affected too much as it has a loyal customer base and a good friendly atmosphere. I don't frequent the Merrion as much so I can'y really comment but I believe it was getting all the rich gamblers on the gaming floor up until now. If I had loads of money and loved a punt then there is no way I would be anywhere else but the SE.

I can see this really shaking up the poker scene for the benefits of the players. The next few months will be interesting.

The only thing I didn't like was the fingerprinting which was kinda jumped on me. As far as I know biometrics have tests to counter the idea of lopping off fingers to fool biometric systems, n'est pas.

The club is very nice and pleasant, the beer is indeed free at the moment I dunno how that will pan out but its not the sort of place people are going to hang out knacker drinking.

    DeV.
