hi just wondering does anyone here know the age of consent for the R.O.I? is it 16 or 17??? i know its 16 in UK but i heard its 17 over here. is that true?

Interesting to note the AOC is 17 in N.Ireland compared to 16 in Britain generally. Why is that?

Be aware that sites like that are not necessarily definitive.

Some acts may have a higher or lower age of consent.

Actually Victor AFAIK the age of consent for males in Ireland is 16 and the age of consent for females in Ireland is 17. I'm almost positive I read it somewhere before.

I read that it was 15 for males and 17 for females. This was in the irish times a while ago.

Yup Vic, I thought it was 16 for males and 17 for females in ireland when the other party was > 17 (i.e. a 16 year old male could have sex with a 17 year old female, but not vice-versa). This could be just a bit of an urban legend though (your banning suggests that it might be

72. Outside of marriage, 17 years is the age of consent for both heterosexual and homosexual intercourse.

A number of websites mention 15 for lesbians and oral sex but given what the official government site says (above), I doubt how reliable they are. Lesbians are homosexual too.

This is the law as it stands.
It is 17 for full sexual intercourse.
A girl between 15 and 17 can consent to sexual acts that fall short of penetraion. The slightest penetration of the vagina constitutes an offence punishable by law.

Can I add a question here...

Are we bound by our consent laws while in foreign countries. For ex. A 16 year old wishing to have lawful intercourse with a 20 year old say.--Not legal here, but in Spain it is(13:eek: )- Would that then be legal? Could you be prosecuted when you arrive home?

They had an article in the Examiner a while ago on sex and it said 15 for boys and 17 for girls. i remember it cos i was rantin bout it for ages afterwards.

The age of consent in the ROI is 17, whether you are male or female, straight or gay.

However....... Sexual contact between male and female, not including penetration, both aged between 15-17 is legal. While sexual contact between male and male, not including penetration, both aged between 15-17 is illegal.

Afaik female and female sexual contact between the ages of 15-17 is not legislated for.
