I'm a long time user of boards, just went unreg because there could be a bad response from this. Basically my parents thought I had an attitude problem, that I thought I was better than everyone else so they sent me to a shrink to talk it out or whatever. I did it to shut them up anyway. Well I went and sat down and just talked or whatever to your one answered her questions, gave my opinions on little anecdotes she had etc. After about 30 minutes she stopped me and said that she thought I definitely did think I was better than everyone, this took me back... I was feeling pretty bad... then she said because I AM better than most people...

Now before this I'm pretty sure I didn't have this superiority complex. But now I've found myself thinking that maybe I am different to other people, but better? What should I think? I understand some philosophers say that everyone has a certain 'self-regard', that everyone thinks that given their situation they did as good as anyone would do with their life, but is it possible that one person can be the best? I'm pretty confused and it's troubling me.

Just from my meagre view, I dont personally believe in IQ, (culturally bound, limited way of measuring people to fit in non-existant boxes for means of societys ease...in my opinion), and from what you say, maybe your hearing what you want to understand about yourself.
Maybe this 'shrink' had told you you have a a high iq, and that you get impatient/bored with the 'little things' everyone around you seems to be going on about, because you are on (of course) a much deeper level.
This aside, there is no justifiable reason to swan around and disrespect the people around you. We're all blood and bone after all.
Relax. And indeed after all if you are so fine compared to JoeNormal, you can surely see where everone else is coming from.
Empathy and understanding, and maybe you can solve the world.

Anyway, I'm fairly sure that they are thought not to feed bad characteristics like a superiority complex. Are you sure she wasn't just taking the piss?

Use your logic. There is a difference.

There is a possibility you are more clever in general, but your attitude sucks aparently according to your nearest and dearest, and so does your shrink IMO.

Humility isnt a bad thing. And a good balance of ego gets you through some difficult times.

But to me... the fact that you are even thinking that you may be better, even "the best", shows you have a lot to learn.

You may excel at certain things in life, but thinking you are the best at everything and a shirink of all people pandering to your ego... is gonna lead you to a big fall later on in life.

Ehm... get a second opinion, not just someone who was so idiotic that they were impressed with your answers.

To the OP:
Mabye the shrink told you this in an effort to boost your self-esteem? It sounds strange to me that she seems to be encouraging a superiority complex. Well the problem is that you DO have an attitude problem in the sense that you went to a shrink to "shut them up". You dont have to think anything; just be more accepting.

I get the feeling that you are a person who sets high standards for yourself and is proud. It doesn't mean you have a superiority complex, but it certainly doesn't help. Two things: what do your friends/peers think, if anything and are you a confident person in general?

This is either a troll (seriously, what consellor, let alone a physcatrist(sp?) in the world we say "You are better than most people" to a patient? What does "better" mean anyway), or the OP really mis-understood what the shrink was talking about and choose to hear what they wanted to hear.

Either way this is a silly post ..
