Ok i've seen this around and wonder what it means. It is usually inserted inside of a quote.

What tit really cares about grammar that much that they would go so far as to put [sic] in a quote just to show that they didnt spell the word wrongly.

well who ever you are, please slap yourself nice and hard for me

    thanks

I don't give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way.

If you were a writer for a newspaper, you would probably want to show that a typo or error is deliberate. It is really to show that you didn't make an error, rather to show that someone else did.

Yes that is fine, but boards.ie is not a newspaper in fact I don’t think anyone gets paid to write on boards.ie therefore if they use this grammatical nuttiness in normal day to day activity they are clearly gone the wrong path in life. You know the path mammies all around the world tell their children about.

There is evidence to show most drug addicts start out life as grammar fanatics. They bore themselves so bad they needed some really hard drugs to give them a little life back. Be weary of the grammar.

It’s the same as you in conversation with your buddies trying to raze the intelligential barrier by constantly looking up your mental thesauruses. I wonder how long it would take for you to get a good damn staring at. It’s a wicked form of snobbery.

It's not used solely to point out the mistakes of others. It can be used to show that even if something appears to be spelled incorrectly, it's not, eg. an unusual spelling of a common surname

I've not seen it used often here, tbh. The only times that spring to mind were ones where it was used sarcastically when quoting someone or something.

If people use it seriously, then fair enough. So long as people aren't been given crap about not using it I don't see a problem. It can be used to highlight an error as much as it can be used to show the error wasn't the author's.

Ok how did you use it that time? I can't see any spelling mistakes? Or is it that you disagree with what was said?

Strictly speaking that sentence could have a grammatical error in it depending on the context D. Stating [sic] after a sentence or word doesn't mean that you don't agree with it, it simply means that whatever has been written (or said afaik) has been reproduced exactly as it has been produced.

I didn't say that boards.ie is a newspaper. I have not seen "sic" used on boards before. I was just pointing out that it is used to show that the error is deliberate.

I don't like to see people give out about bad grammar, but seeing people give out about good grammar is worse.
