Have a look at the Dimension 9100 (D10917) (pick best spec'd one (€1440 and downgrade cpu :) )

    Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 820 with HT technology (2.80GHz, 800MHz fsb, 2MB cache)
Microsoft Operating System Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition, SP2
    Memory - 1024MB Dual Channel DDR2 533MHz (2x512) Memory
Keyboard - Dell Entry Quietkey USB Keyboard - UK/Ire (QWERTY)
Monitor - Dell 19" Value Flat Panel (E193FP)
    Video Card - 256MB nVidia GeForce 6800 (DVI/VGA/TV-out)
Hard Drive - 320GB Serial ATA RAID 0 Stripe [2x160GB 7200rpm drives with DataBurst™ cache]
Floppy Drives - Internal 9-in-1 Flash Card Reader
Mouse - Dell USB Optical Mouse
Modem - V.92 Data Fax Modem
    CD/DVD Drives - 16x DVD+/-RW & 16x DVD Drives
Speakers - Dell 5650 5.1 Surround Speaker System
Microsoft Application Software Microsoft® Works 7.0 - English
Standard Warranty - 1 Year Collect and Return
Cover It with Dell Support Services - 1 Year European Collect and Return Service
    Price: €956

Has the superior and expensive 800series processor, decent graphics card, 1gb ram, big hard drive, 19" flat panel & lots of other bits and bobs!
If you want to overclock, just whip out the motherboard (to the void of your warranty) and replace!

(you're looking at about €1500 for a similar spec from Komplett. I'm not a dell fan but you cant deny that is a ridiculously good offer!)

Was it dell who use to make their M/Boards non standard so you could not replace them and also could not fit standard pci cards? if so are they still at this

    Thanks Cubix

    Just ordered :D

How long they take to deliver usually?

The dual core cpu seems ideal for my kind of usage as well... review @ http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=145&type=expert&pid=17

"I have to commend Intel for opening the benefits of dual core processors to a much larger range of users than AMD has announced support for thus far by offering lower cost Pentium Ds. The 820 is the cheapest we will have, coming in around $250, and offers a great multitasking environment for less than half of the cost of the cheapest Athlon 64 X2 4200+. Does the performance of the 820 match that of the 4200+? Of course not but if you can’t afford a $550 processor then it doesn’t matter much does it?

Intel isn’t going to be winning any performance awards that exceed what the Pentium 4 could do with the new Intel Pentium D 820, or with any of their current array of Pentium D processors. At least not on current single threaded benchmarks anyway. The performance benefits of dual cores are much more difficult to materialize and even to write about, but the benefits are there. And with Intel pushing dual core in full swing, more and more applications and environments will be utilizing them more efficiently. And that means even better performance for the end user.

I have set up a discussion thread in our forums here for this review.

Be sure to use our price checking engine to find the best prices on the Intel Pentium D 820, and anything else you may want to buy!"

Cubix - If they're motherboard are non standard, the most you'd have to change would be the case & psu to fit a new one but I doubt that'd be the case.

Placebo - that definately isnt worth €181! 2.8ghz will be plenty on a PC like that!
If you're going to upgrade anything go for the 7800 for an extra €240 i think!

Chump - nice one!! :D Glad someone could take advantage of this - I reckon it must be a mistake! About a week I think btw.

If you're still interested. Ring them and quote the E-value. Tell them the spec and price. You might still get a similar machine.

I was in the same situation the other week, and the above worked.

D5100 wasn't available anymore, so the rep gave me the D5150 for same spec and price. Magic!

Just a note, the D5150 are very silent running machines.

Just a note, the D5150 are very silent running machines.
Just purchased one myself. Very silent apart from extra CD/RW drive fitted which makes a shocking amount of noise (vibration) when operating. Probably little point in complaining to Dell...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,019 ✭✭✭ct5amr2ig1nfhp

I know this is a little off topic but...
Dec4, I actually tried sticking in an old cdrw from my d8100 machine. I replaced it years ago with a dvdrw, so its just been lying around.

For some reason, after installing it, cd's/dvd's were taking forever to load. So I just took it out. Both drives are on the same cable and are set to CS. Maybe I missed something?

    ambrose

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 391 ✭✭Dec4

Actually the CD/RW I'm complaining about was Dell factory-fitted at an extra cost of €60odd. The 9-in-1 reader is also loose in it's housing. Bit shoddy....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,807 ✭✭✭chump

I must say I'm amazed at the build quality of the 9100 series.
Even the dvd player and dvd rw are good quality drives, sony and nec respectively. The case is a neat tidy unit. (compared to the shoddy dvd and cr-rw drives that sound like planes taking off on some of older dells ive used)
Overall am v. impressed. And I couldn't believe the 19inch monitor had no dead pixels. I was sure I was going to get a handful. Delighted!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭commited

Do a benchmark 3dmark 2005 will you and post your score, would be interesting to see what score you get.

    Thanks

    6500 out of the box

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,807 ✭✭✭chump

    Is that the score ?

Anyway mad m it's not particularly fast at gaming...

I've played the f.e.a.r demo, which kicks ass by the by, but the machine definetely cant get the 60fps you'd hope at high settings, and even more so in quake4...

It's definetely respectable, which does me as I don't really play games, but it isn't amazing...

That said I haven't played any games in years and am amazed at how graphically SPLENDID they've become :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭commited

Chump - change the motherboard and Overclock the mother B)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,807 ✭✭✭chump

I did some benchmarking with quake4... you have to run with +set com_allowConsole 1 command

    playNetTimeDemo "ggl-timedemo.netdemo"
    As referenced from http://www.ggl.com/view_forum_topic.php?TopicId=769

Standard: High quality, all settings max (or ON), except AA off.
    FPS results below.

    640x480 - 46.44
    800x600 - 44.5
    1024x768 - 44
    1280x1024 - 37.01

Downloaded new drivers that apparently add extra support for dual processors...
    81.87_forceware_winxp2k_english.exe

    800x600 - 48.97
    1280x1024 - 44.28

A pretty decent increase as you can see...
    Other settings tried:
1280x1024 - low settings, vsync off, high qual off - 47.98
    1280x1024 - ultra quality, all on - 37.94

Likely to use settings playing quake 4:
800.600, medium quality, with autoCFG - got 55.87 fps...

I would point out that this demo is a bit crappy, and I actually noticed a huge in-game (single player) increase in my actual fps... so these drivers definetely are worth the punt!

    autoexec.cfg contains

    set com_showFPS "1"
    set com_fixedTic "-1"

    // G R A P H I C S
    set r_swapInterval "1" //vsync on/off - keep it off
set r_fullscreen "1" //fullscreen or window mode (can alt-enter for window mode toggle)

set image_downSizeBump "1" //enables Bump mapping downsizing setting
set image_downSize "1" //use to enable image downsizing setting
set image_downSizeSpecularLimit "256" //set same as graphics memory for optimal
    set image_downSizeBumpLimit "1024" //1024 for 256mb gfx. 512 for 128mb gfx. 256 for 64mb gfx lower is faster
set image_downSizeLimit "256" //set same as graphics memory for optimal
    set image_lodbias "-1" //appears broken somewhere, use -1
set g_decals "0" //bullet holes on walls and other effects etc, on/off
    set g_muzzleFlash "0" //default 1
    set g_brassTime "0" //ejecting spent ammo, 0-1, 1 default
set g_projectileLights "0" //remove lights from projectiles, 0 is faster
    set g_skipItemShadowsMP "1" //remove item shadows - MP only, default 0
    set g_skipPlayerShadowsMP "1" //remove player shadows - MP only, default 0
    set g_showPlayerShadow "0" //player shadows on/off, default 1

oh and it shouldn't be long before I have my mitts on F.E.A.R :)

    6900 with off drivers.
What do you expect chump with a 2.8 and 6800 ultra.

The 7800 handles f.e.a.r at around average 85 fps (gfx high, pc custom),
(min was 40 and max was 200).
Havn't got to do any tweaking yet or mess around with drivers.

chump, I wouldn’t be too disappointed at your fear fps scores, seemingly it is one of the most gfx demanding games to be released ever if not the most demanding one. This pc is one of the best deals I have seen for any pc bargain.

Decent machine for the money. If you're not into overclocking and don't mind the limited upgrade potential, don't want to or can't build one yourself, for sure consider buying one. Modern Dells are amazingly quiet as well

Yes. Case+PSU+mobo would easily hit €200 though and we're still talking crap. The other components would prevent any overclocking whatsoever, which is fine if you're not into it

My €0.02 advice: if you buy a Dell, don't even think about O/C at all

I posted it because it is a genuine bargain, not on the grounds to overclock :S
The €500 less it costed then building it yourself would easily pay for a nice mobo/case/psu/HSF.
As for the other components, the ram may not be the most amazing, nor will the graphics card, but the cpu will be just as overclockable as any other 820.
Doubt no more! Dell dimension mobo and psu are non standard these days. Period.
Is the case? You'd want to upgrade the psu anyway if you were even thinking of oc'ing. I know optiplex's are totally custom, but all the dimension cases ive seen were ATX.

Depends on the model. I've a Dimension 4600 not even a year old that takes a standard PSU. I've built and OC many of my own systems over the years. However the last time, I bought a Dell from the Outlet because it was so cheap, its practically disposable. I couldn't have bought the parts cheaper.

Many times in the last good few years have I specced up machines based on parts to be bought from on-line shops against fully assembled Dell systems. Most of the time I beat Dell. The worst I ever did was only just matching the Dell price. But (and a big but) I never included the price of an OS or the value of the Dell warranty

Needless to say in the cases where I only matched the Dell price, those Dell systems were very good value for money, for the market they are intended for

Not too sure, the case might very well be ATX compatible

Anyway, I think we agree. Some Dells in some configurations* represent very good value for money :)

    * And then there is the Dell outlet as well :D

PSUs are standard on some. It definately is on the Dimension 4600. It isnt on the 8250, 8300 (Dont know about the new models). Anyhow for 99% of people this is only an issue if the PSU fails outside of warranty (And when it happens it a big issue if you can only order a replacment from Dell).

It is great bargain. I'd have bought it if I (even half) needed a new computer.

However, if you venture to another post on this thread you will see a komplett spec'd similar machine which came to over €500 more + del. I'm merely stating fact here - it was an excellent deal. Every single person who mentions to me that they are buying a dell, I try to discourage them because mostly they are overpriced. This one was not however, and if you'd stopped to look at the spec and not just seen the word "Dell" you'd have realised it too :p

Dell have finally started to cut their profit margins on the base systems I think (just dont try and upgrade :o ), and the savings are becoming less and less.

I've never ever bought a retail PC, but this one really made me stop and consider it. If I hadnt just bought a laptop I probably would have :) I'm happy a few people could avail of it :)
Not too sure, the case might very well be ATX compatible

Anyway, I think we agree. Some Dells in some configurations* represent very good value for money :)

    * And then there is the Dell outlet as well :D
Yup - but the dell outlet doesnt really offer many bargains anymore unfortunately :(

I always recommend Dell systems. Its easier, and people are just as thankful. They might save a few hundred but you are to blame if it breaks.

I'm in the same position as Tempest. Got a 4600 for about the price a the hard drive and memory would cost on komplett from the Outlet. It is 12 mths old now, and still runs perfect. The outlet is gone to the dogs alright though.

Is there any point in trying the outlet anymore?
People seem to think the "bargains" are finished there?

Just gone over the spec in a bit more detail, and yes, you're right. Buying the parts for that PC would be at least several hundred € more than the Dell price and then I'm still disregarding OS, warranty and I didn't even bother pricing keyboard, mouse, speakers, modem or shipping for that matter

    That was a bargain!
