consider buying online, and having it delivered to your hotel from out of state before you even arrive. No sales tax that way, and you dont waste your holiday time going around shopping.

The village is good for clothes but if you want to get the great deals you will have to go to an outlet. There are two within an hour or so of Manhatten. You can get the bus from the Port Authority bus terminal for about 15 dollars return and spend the day out threer.

Other than that, go to the deli on 48th and second and get an italian hero. Its the best deli in New York, great for Hero's!

J & R is really worth a visit. Its down near City Hall, which isn't a million miles from Chinatown.

Its got several blocks of gadgets ! and its reputable, better than some of the tourist trap shisters (sp?) in Time Square, etc

    electronics (focusing on cameras) http://bhphotovideo.com/
spend a while in the (amazing) apple store in soho: http://www.apple.com/retail/soho/

dont forget sales tax in nyc is 8,5ish% (i think its actually 8,625% but i cant find the actual figure) on most things and its only added on at the till.

    When are you going?
All the best sales are on either during or directly after major holidays. The next is Thanksgiving Day on November 25th.

For electronics, as already said, J&R (near city Hall) is really good. Also Target and BestBuy can be very good. I usually check their websites for deals before I go.

For clothes, Old Navy stores are really good for non-brand casual clothes. For brand name/designer clothes, Macys can be really good as they sometimes have bargain rails. Also, if you go to the main Macys in the centre of New York, bring your passport, as proof that you are a tourist, to the information desk and apply for a free Macys discount card (10% off I think).
Other cheap clothes stores to check out are Blues on Broadway (mainly DKNY and Levis).

For the main designer brands, you really can't beat Woodbury Common, especially during a sale.
    Check out for details.

Have a look at Century 21 downstairs first see what they have. Its a bit small but they may have them...

Then just walk up a block and to the left and you have J & R. Its been done out now and takes over the whole block .... still will have to pay the 17+% tax though....

New Jersey is a bit cheaper on Tax. If you can get to Delaware then there is not TAX.

Im thinking about woodbury outlet... Dont know if you would get it there ... there is a sony outle but they sell referb and bose ....

Forget anywhere else in downtown NY they will def just rip you off...

I would probably buy on ebay and get shipped to your hotel... but I think you will only save a few $$ anyhow....

Prob. get the same price in Circuit City

but it saves you wasting your holiday time walking around from shop to shop.

I brought very little to NY, first stop century 21, got a giant suitcase with wheels for only €50 (would have been about €200 here) and loaded it with stuff. Went from shop to shop with it. Most shops have security guys who look after the bag for you, giving you a ticket. Buy your stuff then collect the suitcase on the way out again, load it up before heading out. Went around in one day, If I had bags I would have had to keep going back to the hotel I had so much stuff.

Place called conways accross from Madison Square Garden has lots of clothes real cheap. Century 21 is nice and cheap but youll be hours looking the place is a disaster stuff is just all over the place. Woodbury common is the best place to go i got loads of stuff and spent next to nothing.

I would agree with Filene's Basement - Marshall's probably has better prices than Filene's but you have to sift through a lot of crap to get to the good stuff in Marshalls. If you are going purely for shopping though, it might be worth your while. You can find Manhattan locations at www.marshallsonline.com.

For electronics, try using froogle (Google's price search engine) for the items you want over mail order.

    Also check out:

    www.compusa.com
    www.walmart.com
    www.bestbuy.com
    www.circuitcity.com

    www.overstock.com
    www.buy.com

The first four should be able to ship directly to one of their own stores in Manhattan, which would mean cheaper shipping than sending them to your hotel - or you might be able to just buy the stuff there. Check out the "in-store pick up" options on their web pages for info.

Also, the lower end department stores have amazing sales - Macy's and JC Penneys in particular. Check out their web pages just before you go to see if they are having sales.

Wal-mart is always a great place to stock up on essentials - socks, underpants etc. if you need to get those.

NY state has about 6% sales tax (I think) on clothes and shoes, and NY City adds another one or two percent to that. NJ and Pennsylvania have no tax on clothes and shoes, and around 6 or 7% on electronics. You could go to Delaware to avoid sales tax altogether - probably about three hours drive from NYC, and hit an outlet centre there. It is probably only worth going that distance if you are going to spend some serious cash - e.g. buying a lot of jewellery.

On more place you might want to check out is here:

    http://www.escc.se/misc/travels1.htm

but it sounds like you need to be pretty hardcore to go shopping there.

I was going to order an ipod and have it sent to my friends hotel but when I looked at the Apple site it said " We are unable to accept credit cards issued by banks outside of the United States". That's a bummer. Any way around it without having to pay for wire transfers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

    order from another reputable store

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,826 ✭✭✭podge018

We went to both Woodbury Common and Jersey Gardens and found Jersey Gardens a hell of a lot better. It's also a shorter bus journey from the Port Authority. It's better laid out too, with just two floors in a sort of oval shape, with shops on the inside and outside of the oval if you get my drift. Woodbury Common is like a mini-village and can get confusing. The stuff on sale in Woodbury is out of fashion too.

agree with you on Woodbury Common - a lot of people recommended that I go there but I was disappointed with it. Lot of the clothes are seconds, not in bad condition, but in the Levis shop pockets were stitched on crooked, belt hooks where the wrong size, etc. And it takes all bloody day to get there and back. Not really worth it - although some may disagree.

There is an electronic shop there (99% sure its Sony) and practically all of the "bargains" had some limited "New York State Only" warranty for 6 months and had a little asterisk on the price. Further investigation revealed that most items were returned under warranty and had been repaired.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,823 ✭✭✭neacy69

soho and the village have lots of funky, "cutting edge" type clothes and is a really nice area. It has loads of sample stores aswell if you want some one-off clothes at low cost

keep an eye out for a store called "Yellow Rat Bastard" bit pricey but the clothes are top of the range

I would definetely reccomend J&R's for any electronics

and the usual century 21, H&M old navy for clothes.

I wouldn't go to woodbury common or the outlet stores without at least grand to spend - honestly you wont even notice yourself spending it cos it is so easy to get carried away there

Note that BHP is run by Hassidic Jews, so it closes at 2:00pm on Friday and is closed all day Saturday. This also means that on a Sunday it can be like a prison riot. The place is great for high end camera equipment if you are looking for some of that.

I didnt think best buy was that great almost everything cheap included a rebait that was only for americans. Centuary 21 is much worse than tk maxx its a million times worse imo, but if youve the time I suppose you could find some bargains i personally couldnt be bothered fighting through the crowds for stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,479 ✭✭✭wheres me jumpa

not a fan of woodbury common. i found alot of the clothes there to be outdated aas stated above. some of the sporting stores had good deals however.

circuit city are great for electronics, they have pretty much everything. their prices are cheap compared to here, im not sure how they compare to other us stores.

might i also recommend, PAYLESS SHOES, these stores are unbelievable!!!

Going to New York at end of November, so this thread has been great for advice. A couple of other questions for anyone who's been there before...

Is NY any good for Jewellery? I need to buy an Eternity Ring around that time and might wait if there is much better value in New York.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations on transport from the Airport? There's a group of about 14 of us going. Are we better waiting until we get there and pick up a limo or 'bus' outside the airport or is it better to book these online before we go?
    Thanks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,464 ✭✭✭Kristok

Yea its good for jewlery theres a whole diamond and gold district run by jewish guys. My gf got some great stuff in k mart, 24k gold ear rings etc going for 70% off.

Dont get a taxi from the airport i did that cost like 60 dollers your better off getting a bus espically if theres so many of you. Whatever you do dont get into anything other than an offical bus or taxi theres guys with mini vans and cars offering transport to manhatten they rip you off big from what ive heard and they are waiting at the exits of the airport begging you to go with them.

I hate this thread its making me want to go back and i aint got the money for it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,587 ✭✭✭hshortt

There's a 35 Dollar flat fare in any offical taxi to any address in Manhattan. You pay only tolls and tips as extras. Shouldn't cost 60 bucks.

Many hotels provide shuttles, it's worth checking them out at the hotel. Some will do combined hotels in one run, so again check out.

I'm off again in January for the sales, Woodbury common, J&R, CompUSA, Macy's, Grenich Village, Little Italy.... can't wait oh, and a Starbucks on every corner helps to keep warm in January!

    Cheers
    Howard

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,464 ✭✭✭Kristok

I was there in august and the flat rate fare was 45 + tolls + tip, which in fairness its a fairly long drive from jfk to manhatten.

    Hey,
there is a place down on 23rd and 6th called Burlington Coat Factory. Don't let the name fool you. they don't just sell coats. it's a real cheap place that sell good band name stock! it's kinda like a TK Maxx, but way way way better. if you are in NY you should seriously check it out. real bargins to be found in there!

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (http://www.panynj.com/) who run the tri-state airports have a bunch of details about transportation options on their website

Probably looking at between USD 12 - 19 per person using the buses or shuttles

Even though the other half and myself lived there for six years, I managed ;-) to avoid buying jewellery in the US... wifey complained about the luster/ shine of the gold...

I'd suggest using http://www.supershuttle.com/ to get you from the airport to the hotel...

I guess we should ask which airport too - there are two which you can end up in from Dublin... and where are you trying to get to in NYC...

Wifey loved the place... although she used to browse round PayHalf in the Newport mall (in New Jersey, two stops on the PATH from World Trade Center)...

They have a fairly good shoe shop in there too... Called Marvins or something similar... it's a shop within a shop so do remember to pay before escaping!

Also do all the floors.. things can be kinda spread out

eh? Tax isn't 17% in New York City, more like 8.7%

A bunch of places in New Jersey are designated as UEZ zones... basically they have 3% sales tax instead of the normal 6%. There are some shops in the Newport Mall which charge 3% (PATH stop is Newport Pavonia)... they'll have UEZ stickers in the window

Newport has a Sears and a Macys (or is that a Mayyyyceeyys) plus a payhalf and a bunch of other chain stores... it's a heckva lot more compact than getting lost around New York shopping too(!)

    Just back from US. (Virginia)
If you're looking for a digi camera - go to bestbuy got a canon sd400 5MP for $299 - check online prices before you go an they will match.
Also if you want SD card for camera guy matched walmart online price of $24 for a 256mb card. Was $49

Also got a Creative Zen Micro 6GB for $170 - same thing - matched online price!

Got 20 Mach3 blades in BJ's whole sale club for $32 - lots of other stuff there too - need a card for this place so you need to know somone over there.

If you See Ross stores they are like TK Max only cheaper

Department stores can be beter value than outlets as they really do discount when they have sales - 75% off and then take another 30% off that!
Polo RL chinos $29 - half price in Dillards. $40 in outlet.

Loads of other stuff too much to mention.

    enjoy

Have to agree with others that Supershuttle is the best way for a bunch of you to get from airport to your hotel. Also brill for going back when you have all the exta suitcases! Book it. They arrive on time and are very courteous unlike some of the cabbies!

Would also highly recommend Burglinton Coat factory. Brill shop.

Go to Jersey Gardens. 30 minutes by bus from Port Authority. Buses go about every half hour. Call them to check times in advance. Drop you right outside. Fab shopping. Outlet shops for Gap, Old Navy, Tommy etc etc. Filenes Basement, Burlington Coat factory etc etc. If you have kids they have a soft play area. Adults can sit down and chill while kids have fun! For big kids (and little uns!) they have great cinema. If the men get tired shopping the women can shop til they drop and the guys can sit and enjoy a movie! Sales tax only something like 3% and it makes a difference on large buys. They have a discount booklet. Present your id - drivers licence or passport at the reception area as you come in from the bus. Get discounts in most shops with these vouchers. You can check out Jersey Gardens list of shops on the web. Happy shopping you lucky things!

I'm going to NY for 8 days mid December with the girlfriend so muchos gratias for all the info in this thread - we're both gonna do a lot of purchasing so from the above I reckon we'll hit Jersey Gardens for a day and then see where that leaves us.

Might try out that BHP shop for a nice digi camera aswell.

The link below intrigued me though - love the idea of finding a place off the beaten track where theres great bargains. Has anyone been there?

I can get good car rental prices with work, but wonder whether I could find parking as we are staying fairly central in Manhatten I think.
