    Evenin'...

I have a laptop here from a relation that had been riddled with spyware and viruses. Before they came to me, they installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and it seems to be goosed.

It seems to install fine now, removed all the spyware etc, and I have it running somehow. But the main issue at the moment is that I cannot re-activate the software, which in turn hampers me getting Live Updates.

When I get to the Activation screen, I click next, and it hangs. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, cleared the registry etc. There is no similar error on the Symantec website.

Your thoughts and solutions are most welcome. :)

Uninstall Nortons and install AVG free http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1. it works much better and is'nt a resource hog. nortons slows down your computer to a huge extent. also install spywareblaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html and Spybot search & destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

My thoughts are delete it all :D It's an awful piece of software & totally unnecessary.
AVG free anti virus has been proved to be better than Norton.
Norton firewall can be replaced with zone alarm (free).

To stop spyware etc, use firefox instead of IE.

Uninstall Norton then shred the disc, and burn the remains. Yes its that bad.

AVG Free/ZoneAlarm Free/Spybot/SpyBlaster/AVG/XCleaner all free. Use FF. Thats good enough, as long as your careful. If you are going to click on any old crap while browsing nothing will protect you. The paid versions of these products are better again, if you like the free version.

Oddly a lot of magazines and website recomend Norton, which is so contrary to most people (bad) experience with Norton that you have wonder how impartial the reviews actually are.

I do know that I despise Norton IS and all its ills, On my home PC and laptop, I have AVG and all manner of spyware cleaners, so for that reason, you are preaching to the converted. Thanks though.

It was my relation who installed it originally on their PC, and I was trying to get this software to work, and not have to tell them they have wasted their hard earned (this side of reinstalling XP.)

Well you won't get much support from people online till you remove it. Theres really little point in trying to fix a PC with it installed.

well, lets just call removing norton an investment for them! The time you spend rectifying the issues is more expensive than the alternative.

I returned a computer to a customer today originally has NIS installed with the latest definitions. 400 infected files, not all hiding in system restore either. NOD32 trial cought em without a bother. One look at the log was enough to persuade the customer to spend €39 on NOD32
