I have an old pentium 1 @ 233mhz with a decent hard drive. i also have a pentium 3 @ 550mhz wit decent specs but no gard drive. i was wondering, i know that if u change hardware on an XP machine, it'll refuse to boot, but if i put the decent win 98 hard drive into this new pentium 3, will i get hassle or is it only an XP thing? the data on the hard drive is too important so im not sure about reinstalling a new OS to get use out of it. so basically, can i take the hard drive wit 98 on it and put it into this totally different PC and just go from thre, bar a few easily fixed driver issues?

    thanks.

Yep, should be fine. How do you have XP on the P3 if there's no hard drive.

Also, XP will only have a sh1t-attack if a certain number of points have been exceeded, each piece of hardware has a different weighting. Network cards are at the top of the barrel for example afaik.

98 will just keep going with the Found new hardware, reboot Y/N, till it gets the job done, just like the little duracell bunny that it is.

BTW: an OEM license does not allow you to move the copy of windows to a different PC - the license is bound to the computer it was supplied with - yes it's a rip off designed to get you to buy new copies of windows - how did you think they got to have to $50,000,000,000.00 in the piggy bank !

NT/2K/XP will die horribly if the IDE controller is different. And by different were talking BSOD on boot up just on different revisions of Intels PIIX4 . And IIRC you only have something like 3 changes - cpu / Vid / chipset / sound card / HDD serial no. - Sorry game over.

By comparision to move XP have a look at this.

But you're allowed to upgrade the PC it was supplied with.
E.g. you can upgrade the m/board, CPU, RAM, HDD, PSU and case but still consider it as legally the same PC.:D

Installing a new OS won't affect the data already on the drive and it's the recommended way of doing it to avoid performance and stability issues later, altough as mentioned Win98 handles it pretty well. It's usually recommended doing this to boot to safe mode in the current machine first and remove as many drivers as possible first. Then move the drive over.

Check the OEM EULA again - It's not that simple

It's usually the motherboard it's locked to, but if you buy OEM from a reseller it's the HW that accompanies it (molex splitter cable ?) I have NOT been able to find on a publically accessible part of Microsofts site what exactly they bind the OEM to - which is a bit rich seeing as how most home users are bound by the agreement.

the P3 actually had no hard drive. thanks for the help anyway. cheances are it'll be 100% different hardware. as regards the licence, i have the original 98 cd wit real serial etc and cert of authenticity. i was under the impression that the licence lets u install the OS on one pc AT A TIME as opposed to wat was sed above?

I suggest you continue to remain under that impression.

Effectively that's what it boils down to. The license can't be locked to one single piece of hardware, as no one piece of hardware defines the PC. Therefore the PC the software license applies to is the one on which the software is installed.

Circular logic but it works for me.
