Dont worry about cash so much... as long as you have a Cirrus bank card you can get cashin any ATM. You will be cahrged a couple of Euro maybe but its not too bad.

I doubt you will get nothing but free drinks, maybe one or two...

there are loadsa threads on new york, latest one here,

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=313258

if you put money onto your credit card and use it like an atm card over there you wont be charged for every transaction. really all you need is few dollars to get from airport to your accommodation after that you an just withdraw cash.

a taxi from jfk to manhattan costs $45, theyll drop you anywhere in manhattan. after that it all depends on what your going to get up to over there. if you want to do the whole tourist thing and take in all the sights and sounds you will need at least $600 spending money. add to this the fact that clothes, electronics etc are so cheap you will prob want to fill your bags.

as for your friend, theres no doubt that some of his story is true but i think it has been blown out of proportion. he prob got two free drinks all week and by the time he got off the plane the story had evolved into a weeks free drink and living.

You can get a shuttle e.g SuperShuttle from JFK to Manhatten for $18 per person. There is a ground transportation desk in the arrival area that will organise it. Be careful, there are a lot of people who will approach you and offer transport. Avoid them. Head for the desk or the yellow taxi rank outside.

For getting around get yourself a Metcard which you can top up as you go along. It works on subway and buses. Each trip costs $2 no matter how long or short. For every $10 you put on you get a free trip.

I wouldn't expect any free drinks. In fact drinking in NY isn't that cheap at all. A beer can be $4-$6 excluding the tip (usually a dollar a drink) though the every 4th or 5th round free for tipping customers seems to still be about.

Probably lying,Americans i met over there are friendly but they aint foolish enough to buy you drink all the time,id say you'll need at least €1,500 minimum for the time you'll be there to have a great time,as for Hotels, just Google it yourself,it's a super place especially Paddys Day enjoy;)

Don't take the missus to China Town if your skin flint all the designer labels for practially nothing, and not getting something there will leave a sour after taste. I'd advse take at least two thousand dollars. Avoid buying American electronics as they're Ntsc and won't work here.

New york is pretty expensive and if your not on your own you're less likely to get your drinks paid for, but have the craic! I'm so jealous, I was meant to be going in Feb but it's my sister's confirmation the same dates
