Fifty Fifty Situations

Playing in a cash game on Friday night in the Fitz. An amazing table as two people were literally giving cash away for free. But I was getting unlucky and impatient that I wasnt getting my slice. I was in for 400 Euro and after about five hours of play I was down to 226 Euro....I was completely card dead and hating the game....

I started fantasizing about AK suited or a nice pair in the hole and then I had a mad train of thoughts. I was asking myself what would I do if I was presented with a 50-50 situation.....for example if I had AKs and I was confident I was up against maybe QQ, or if I had QQ and was up against AKs..I, like probably everyone else, decided that I would commit all of my chips to a situation like this...

And so I got up out of my seat, threw the 1 Euro chip in my place and asked the dealer to give away my seat if I wasnt back in three minutes. I took the 225 Euros and went over to the roulette table to where I placed it on black, a 50-50 shot at doubling up....the ball spun round and landed in black, and the roulette dealer pushed me 450 Euro...

I walked back to the poker table and began playing again and after another 2 hours left with 750 Euro...........

But this leaves me confused, because every day I play cash poker I take these 50-50 shots and the more I think about it the more I think that its insane. And the internet is FULL FULL FULL of people who gladly commit their full tanks with AK v PP or vice versa, and are more times than not a max of 50-50, full of them, I see it all day. And some times I am part of this group, infact probably more than I would like to admit.....so why dont they all just get their bank rolls and play 'black or red' all day...its the same odds and infact slightly better odds alot of the time...

A good lesson for me, I really need to think more about these 50-50's and the value of getting involved in them because over long periods you can only come out evens with them so whats the point in getting involved at all.......

    Yikes!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. I had never played roullette before this....EVER

I hate committing all of my stack on a fifty/fifty shot in a cash game. Because you have decisions to make on every street, it's not the same as putting money on roulette (which after all, is 35:17 against).

This is exactly the point i've been making in 3 of my last posts - "Playing with the ladies" and "definitely ahead - ever fold?". I don't think a 50-50 is worth it. I also had pocket Ks knocked down 5 times in 3 hours yesterday on VC Poker. Depressed. :)

It's only 50-50 if you know 100% that you're up against AK, and that's not including information that an A or a K might be in someone elses hand as well.

You do know 100% that you have QQ in your hand, and you are also involved in a time limited STT, with ever increasing blinds ..... not the same thing at all.

I agree there with Culchie, and also there's very seldomly a time when you go all in for your whole stack to be called by AKs (i.e with QQ). Or the alternative when someone will go all in with AKs or QQ before you and you have the opposite where you call. This would be a similar comparison to betting on Black in roulette. And in either case is it an insta call with QQ or AKs??

Normally the pot will be engineered so that it is giving you better odds than 1:1. And therefore although the odds of winning the hand may be roughly 50:50, there’ll usually be a slight equity in the pot to make this 50:50 more profitable long term rather than black in roulette.

I consider it acting like the casino, where you also hold the 0 and 00, you’d need to play an awful lot of Poker to make this pay off long term, but someone like yourself RMcG, or similar pro’s, I would have thought would play enough hands for this slight edge to pay off. However for recreational and social players who will normally not play enough hands it is basically purely gambling and a shot that you take if you want to or not, depending on how lucky you are feeling, obviously once the pot is only offering even odds or there abouts….. once you are getting better than that say as little as 1.5/1 (or so) odds this gamble should always be taken.
