My friend has IBM think Pad which recently just stopped working i brought it to my tech guy at work who said it was feckered and maybe if she got a new HD it would be ok, the Laptop is old enough do you think she would be better off just getting a new one rather than paying to see if a new HD would fix it?

And secondly is it possible to sell a laptop like this at all?

If you said it wasn't working anymore, then yes you could sell it -- for a lower price, obviously.

Getting a new HDD sounds like a nice idea, though -- after all, a new HDD is around €75, if you need an OS, that's another €75 (new & OEM). So €150 total, tops.
Now compare that to a brand-new €750 laptop!!

Obviously if she is happy enough with it, she should get it fixed; unless she does need/want more power.
Of course, if it's not the HDD... _bugger_...

Before making any drastic decisions, it might be worth finding out exactly what is wrong.

If your car stopped at the side of the road and the mechanic just told you it's fecked, get a new one, would you be happy? Especially if it had only ran out of petrol?

How old is the laptop? I had several Thinkpads in my last job and they were the ultimate workhorses - never really had a days trouble with them.

Does it even power on? Can you get into the BIOS? What Operating System did it run?

    My house :D

That's a good question. Do you know anyone who is a serious techy? Someone you can trust (trust not to say, "Ah it's fecked, get a new one")?

    lol

Well he is polish and i cant really understand the techi stuff in english. But he fixes all the computers in my internet cafe so i assume he knows his stuff!!

She would be as happy to go buy a new laptop and have it under warranty i think than go to the bother of spending loads of money again gettinga new hd which could feck up in 5 mins.

How much would something like this sell for

It's difficult to say, unless you tell us what model/spec number it is.

I can't see all the way to Cork from here. :D

    hehehe youre funny!!!

    I think this is it...

    PENTIUM 3 LAPTOP IBM T22,
Processor: 900 MHz Intel Pentium III
    Number of Processors: 1
    RAM: 128 MB
    RAM Type: SDRAM
    Max RAM: 512 MB
    L2 Cache: 256 KB
    Memory Slots: 1

That's a decent enough spec for basic word processing, internet, that kind of light stuff. It depends on what is wrong with it. You would probably get 50-100 Euro if you were to sell it, though a new hard-drive is 70 Euro. And it could do with more memory (50 Euro?). Don't get me started on the battery....

A new Dell would cost 600-700 Euro and Tesco sell a basic model for around the same. Neither are anything special, but if it's just a basic, usable machine, these are two to consider.

So if its fixable youd recomend keeping it? Hmmm.. now to find some where to have a look at it
