Has the spyware got to the point where the only way out is to format and re-install windows?

Are you using firefox? I assume you have pop ups disabled too?

    This might help:

"It turns out that some clever people figured out that you could launch popups from Flash, getting around the Firefox default settings.

Fortunately, you can get around it:

    1. Type about:config into the Firefox location bar.
    2. Right-click on the page and select New and then Integer.
    3. Name it privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins
    4. Set the value to 2.

    The possible values are:

    * 0: Allow all popups from plugins.
    * 1: Allow popups, but limit them to dom.popup_maximum.
    * 2: Block popups from plugins.
    * 3: Block popups from plugins, even on whitelisted sites.
    "

get rid of all dodgy filesharing programs - these are probably adding to your spyware problem.

The only spyware I've seen affect Firefox was either installed with a 3rd party program or was installed when somebody used IE, I've certainly not seen Firefox have issues like your discribing

Why do people keep on offering this "solution" to everything?? There are plenty of other things that can and should be done before re-installing windows... Especially when we are talking about less experienced users.

Do you have a firewall and an anti-virus program? If not, get Zonealarm and AVG
    Firewall, free: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=dbtopnav_zass

    Antivirus, free:
    http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

If you have windows XP, get Microsoft antispyware for free:
    http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Spybot seacrh and destroy is a free tool, get it from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Download the lastest version of firefox (1.0.7)as well. I think this will sort you out.

It seems like a reformat is his best option unless he still has dodgy progs on his PC.
As he said above he has anti-virus, anti spyware programs & XP SP2 has a perfectly good firewall as standard!

Try the new beta version of firefox as a last resort (I had a fe tiny issues with it though)

when you ctrl-alt-del, might help if you post a pic of what processes are running :)

Could be as simple as a dodgy program in your start up..

    Also:
go to start>run> type "msconfig" & have a look at start up items there - might help to post a screen shot of that too :)

Might be able to rescue it yet :)

Theres really no need to reinstall windows. If you don't know whats the problem is, or how to find it, you'll just get the same problem again. Spend some time fixing it now and you'll save yourself from being in this position again.

You need to look at the processes that are running, turn off all the non essential ones and see what left taking up the memory. You also need to look at the security settings in your browser and see if they are all set up correctly.

If you run Spybot/Adware/AVG/ZoneAlarm/SpyBlaster/X Cleaner I reckon you'd find it. MS anti spyware beta never finds anything on my PC so I don't trust it myself. If you really want some help you are going to have to supply us with more information.

Where are you BTW. Some board member might be around the corner and could check it out for you.

Try registering with www.pcpitstop.com and running a full test. At the end it will tell you what spyware/adware you have aswell as suggest other things to help. Also try http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm and use that in conjunction with msconfig to see what programs should and shouldn't be there.

    Hope this helps.

Good point. Most of the people wouldn't mind helping out either I'm guessing. Would only cost you a few cups of tea/coffee and several choccie bikkies. :D

Are you using Mozilla or Firefox?
Did you try using System Restore?
When running programs like Spybot SnD or AntiVir, do it in safe mode.
You may also try doing a repair install of XP rather then a full install.

    Open regedit and navigate to:
HKLM/Software and click the plus beside any suspicious keys, if you cannot id the program that created them, export the key to a .reg file and then delete it.
Now navigate to HKCU/Software and do the same.
Now navigate to HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run and delete any suspicious entries
Do the same for HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Current Version/Run

This will remove any erroneous entries from the registry, now run the antispyware/antivirus apps again and hopefuly it will sort it.

If you are living near me, I can sort it for you, I dont charge too much, it depends on what the problem is and how long it takes to fix. Most of the time I fix machines for nothing (except a cup of coffee).
