International Serenity openings being canceled. Argentina, Thailand, Taiwan, Brazil and Singapore have all decided to release Serenity direct to DVD. International fans waiting for cinema release should check with UIP to see if it is still being released in their country

    Damn. :(

This is bad news. I doubt the DVD will sell very well if it hasn't been released in theatres, either.

That blurb gives the impression that the countries themselves decided against a theatrical release. Did it mean the natonal branches of UIP or something?

why? theres a number of films that have sealed their reputations on DVD and done much better than in the cinema. Donnie Darko springs to mind.

Family Guy got itself uncancelled etc etc.

Yes, but I was thinking that maybe it wouldn't if it was a straight-to-DVD thing. People wouldn't have a chance to see it in cinemas. And straight-to-DVD usually means "crap" in people's minds. Or so I imagine. I could be wrong, though. We'll just have to see how it goes.

And yeah, I think it was the branches of UIP just trying to cut their losses.
It's also bad for the browncoats in those countries, as they won't get to see it in all its glory on the big screen. :(

Yes, that is a very shiny bright side! :D

Hopefully it'll pull in enough money over here, and in the US. Eventually. ;)

Rumour has it that the dvd will be released on the 20 of December. R1 I presume.
    From The Rumour Mill
Our ever reliable industry sources are telling us that Universal will soon announce the DVD release of Joss Whedon's Serenity for 12/20. Early word indicates that the disc may include Whedon audio commentary, along with at least 4 behind-the-scenes featurettes (Future History, We'll Have a Fruity Oaty Good Time, Re-Lighting the Firefly and What's in a Firefly), a video introduction to the film by Whedon and 6 minutes worth of outtakes. Some of the details on the extras comes from the BBFC website (click the link and hit enter). We'll post more as it comes in.

So I guess we should be hoping that the Xmas postal strike doesn't go ahead. Have also heard that there will be an extra special dvd release 6 months later.

I wonder if the Whedon introduction that they talk about is the one from the September (It was September, right?) advance screenings? Probably not though. Be cool if they included that as an Easter Egg or something.

Would love to see that again. Then go right into the movie. For some reason it just made it more enjoyable from the getgo :)
