    Howye

I just bought a compound off ebay because it was dirt cheap (€300 for a Hoyt Ultratec!). Anyhow, it is only the bow and no release, rest or other essentials. I'm looking on the www for the various things needed but when it comes to releases I haven't a clue.

Does anyone know the differences between a thumb release, finger release, back tension release and a wrist release. Basically, whats the best one for a compound beginner?

You should shoot with your finger for a few weeks to get used to it, then get either a thumb or finger release. Dont get one of the back tension ones as it will be like your pulling about 200lbs, they only go off when you have the correct back tension, hece the name. Only David o Brien shoots one of them in ireland.

You should consider going to a club that has a compound member to go through all the details. Trying to find information on the internet can be misleading.

The Spiga Thumb release is cheap, predictable, and reliable - can be had on altservices. Get a relatively heavy, thick longrod - look about on ebay. Get a rest off ebay - the NAP Qui(c)kTune works pretty well. Sight - ebay. Just make sure its not a multipin or pendulum hunting sight.

The sight I got off ebay didnt have a scope on it - I got one of the Cartel ones off altservices, was grand. nice big sight picture as well.

    Hope this helps.

Sure-loc challenger sight block is near impossible to screw up on a compound and its solid and easy to fiddle around with so its a good bet for beginner. Copper jack's good too tho.

Come down to gmit sports hall some wednesday evenin and i'll be around if you want to try out a couple things. Joe has an old school compound and a wrist release and a few other thingamajigs so your welcome to try them out before you go a spending. I hurt my shoulder so I'm not up to much except coaching the newbies anyway.

Thanks to ye all for the info!

eBay seems to be the way to go on compound equipment. Is it OK to shoot XX75s from a compound or do you have to go carbon?

XX75s are fine for compounds. Just make sure they're stiff enough to shoot. You might have difficulty getting XX75s you used for recurve to group due to the extra poundage.
If you're buying arrows, try downloading Easton's Shaft Selector Program (bout 5.5Mb I think). Select all the compound specs and click <Aluminium Only>. Look for '75' and it should give you the right spine.
