Depends a lot on the drivers/hardware... but if it's any help, when I want to rotate my screen from the gfx card's end, I right-click the desktop, go to properties, settings, advanced... and since I've got an nVidia card, there's a tab in there for my GeForce ... and an option called NVRotate where I can set the rotation.
Like I said, your friend may have completely different hardware and this may not work exactly as stated, but it's one of the first things I'd have a look at.
Also check the LCD screens on-screen-menu (if there is one).

ctrl + Alt Gr + arrow usually works for me!! If not boot in safe mode and remove the adapter, boot as normal and add the adaptor again...
