"Rome" is a co-production between HBO and the BBC (HBO have shown eight or nine episodes already). It's not "basically a porno", though it's not intended for the same audience that regularly watches the Tweenies and learns stuff from it - the announcer will likely indicate that it contains some adult scenes from the start but that's what happens when you make a Rosencrantz and Guildenstern-style historical epic, set it in Caesar's Rome and try to include some aspect of authenticity (and hold an audience so you make a few quid out of it). It's something of a replacement for Six Feet Under from the point of view of HBO, it's a second partnership with HBO (after Band of Brothers) from the point of view of the BBC. I'd find it relatively unlikely that the BBC would co-fund a series and let Sky have their wicked way with it first.

So is this like 'Up Pompeii' for the 21st Century?

Have you seen the promos? They're really badly acted and make it look terrible. But they show a few tiny clips of the actual show towards the end which actually look impressive.

Did anyone chatch this show. Is it any good. Anyone know if its repeated at all

Its a great show after the first few episodes but BBC cut the pilot to **** and even cut episode 2 into it.

They literally cut all meaning and pace from the pilot and just left the sex and fight scenes. Beats the whole point of making a show about rome viewed through the eyes of 2 soldiers.

If you have cousins in the usa, i'd recommend as them to send you the proper pilot.

They said last night that it'll be repeated on saturday night at 11.25-ish. I suppose there's a chance that they'll do what Ch4 used do with Angel and show the full version at that hour, as they've well gone past the watershed. On t'other hand, perhaps not.

    I enjoyed the show, tbh....

the BBC used to do that with some shows indeed. but why bother not showing the full episode after 9pm

I have no idea why they didn't show it all after nine; it strikes me as very un-BBC to leave in wholesale riding and fighting and take out meaningful dialogue. I've heard, from another source, that actually there was a pre-episode one show, done for the US just to explain to the Septics what Rome was, where Rome was and presumably what Julius Caesar was doing in Gaul when there was no evidence of any weapons of Mass Destruction there. Apart from these little fellas obviously....

Perhaps it was the showing of this that Gummy Panda is referring to above...the assumption on the part of those in the BBC might be that the target bbc2 audience would have a good idea of what was going on....

They got in a bit of hot water lately for showing Pulp Fiction at the shockingly early hour of ten past nine. Turns out the watershed eeks in rather than just starting at 9 like one might think.

As for the cuts, I heard they were mostly made to cut out nasty language like "cvnt" (darned language filter), which is largely forbidden on the BBC, unlike all the rampant screwing you can, er, eat. I'll happily be corrected on this though, if there were more major cuts. There was indeed a "making of/where is rome and what do they eat" pre-pilot ep shown two weeks before the proper pilot on HBO. I noticed Crassus was barely mentioned, although in 50BC he was as powerful as Caesar and Pompey but that's the way history unremembers poor Crassus I suppose.

Take your point on the language cuts. I'm convinced, mind, that BBC2 showed Glengarry Glenross...and that has the pivotal scene where Al Pacino calls Kevin Bacon a cvnt twice, if memory serves...

I just read the recap on tv.com (anyone else still missing TV Tome?), and I don't think that episdoe two was combined into this one. Though I could be wrong. Guess I'll have to rewatch the repeat on Sat. though, and see if it is an uncut version.

But apart from that what did everyone think. I thought it was good, very entertaining, and plenty of familar face scattered all around.

I was looking forward to watching the first episode last week but I was perplexed by the jumping of the scenes and the lack of political background / trickery etc. Then I read an article in the Sunday Times that explained it all

Episodes 1, 2 and 3 were combined into episode 1 and 2. The director of the first three episodes, Michael Apted (yes the world famous one!) was truely p!ssed off about this

My cousins in the us have sent me it already :)

Yup, you are right. Read that same article.

Mind you, am still enjoying the show. Don't think I'll be bothering my cousins with requests for the HBO version just yet :)

Thought I might try resurrecting this thread, which has languished since the last post by Fence.
Can't find much else on ROME on boards so it's possible no-one's watching it at all. Which is a shame as it's really great fun. Sadly, there are only a few more episodes to go as it's only got a twelve episode run. And unless the beeb/hbo sell it to RTE or SKY to make a few extra quid while making the second season, it'll be a long time before anyone gets to see it again. Except me - Fence is getting it for me on DVD (as soon as it comes out anyway!)

So, if anyone fancies talking about ROME, Titus Pullo, Lucius Vorenus or anything else, hop onto this thread.

    Or visit my ROME site

    :D
