Help needed - Viewing AVIs

    I've got some avi files that I need to view but unfortunately neither Windows Media Player or Quicktime seems to be able to do it.

    Windows Media Player will play the sound but not the picture and Quicktime tells me I need a download but doesn't specify which one.

    I suspect that the avi may be div-x encoded but I'm not sure. Is there any way to find out more details about the file I have so I can be sure what codec i need to download to view it?

    Make sure you have the latest version of windows media player,
    this may solve it.

    Otherwise to see which codec you require try Gspot
    http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

    I would try to avoid installing those codec packs which contain unnecessary codecs.

    www.videolan.org -> vlc media player

    I've never found a file that it couldn't play. WMP usually downloads the relevant codecs for you though. Are you on dial up?

    Download Gspot and open the avi with the program. That'll tell you exactly what codec is needed and if it is installed on your pc.

    Also, make sure you have the relevant setting ticked in WMP.

    Hey thanks a million guys. It's a friend's computer I'm trying to watch the stuff on so I'm going to download that Videolan program and give it to her.

    Hopefully it will work. Thanks for the advice.
