ok, I've googled this and can you believe it, there was only one web site that tells you how to tie-die and it was aimed at children and just gave the basics. Now I know the basics, get the die's, tie up the clothes and dip it in. But what I'm wondering is, if anyone is perticulary skilled at it, could they post up any do's and don't's that they may have.
I have a few things that I would like to tie-die and I have an idea of how I want them to look with a few colours not just one and I feel that once I start there is a likelyhood that I'll make a balls of it.... so any help would be apreciated.

The simplest patterns are circles, obviously. If you catch your t-shirt by the middle of the front, and every few inches back tie a piece of string around it. Bung it into a bucket of dye. You'll have concentric circle type patterns. Or tie clumps of the t-shirt up randomly for, well, random circles. The more you scrunch it up, the more marbley (I guess) effect you'll get.
After that, you can experiment with more than one colour on the t-shirt by hanging it above the bucket of dye, and doing half at a time. Get a few old sheets/t-shirts to experiment first.
What 'look' were you looking for?
We went through a phase of tie-dying everything because it was a good laugh. Luckily it kind of coincided with the late '80's rave/baggy period, so we didn't look like total plebs/hippies (I hope)
