Recovery of data from a re-installed system

A family member has done this:

1/ System was running Win ME - i'm guessing with FAT FS

2/ System was upgraded to Win XP
(software upgrade - no format - old data is still on the harddrive - i'm guessing still FAT FS)

3/ System didn't work as expected and Win ME was re-installed
(possibly with a format - I'm guessing still with FAT FS)

They now discovered that the harddrive no longer has their data.

I'm guessing that it should be possible to recover some of the data.

The easiest option seems to remove the h/d and install it in a working system and mount the drive as slave.

Any suggestions on a product to use?

I use a BartPE (bootable live windows) CD, with FileScavenger and Data Recovery plugins .. works absolute wonders on individual machines.. File Scanveger should still work perfectly if you just put the drive into another machine though, I'd imagine 50-80% of the data is recoverable.

unless there was a full format done when ME was reinstalled.

in the end i used getdataback and recovered all that was missing

some of the file names were a bit mushed - but i think they can cope with that
