You prefer the original? I find the bizare to be honest.

Anyway, not sure if it was ever released on DVD. I know at the moment the 'directors cut' is the only one available in any format.

(and as far as I know there's an even more 'directors' cut version sitting in a vault somewhere.. Ridley Scott fell out with the copyright holders over that debacle that is the version you claim to prefer, and they won't let him release it)

Ah the sneering down the nose at the original version.

To be honest theres a theory I subscribe to that the only reason the directors cut is viewed as superior is because people have seen the original with the exposition voice over, and without the knowledge and background provided by the voice over in the original, the directors cut would be a completely incoherant mess.

Essentially you get to watch the film with the knowledge provided by haveing watched the original with Ford's weary voice over, so you can watch the directors cut, armed with the information provided by your previous viewing of the original, and uncumbered with the tedious, but necessary vo.

Structural I think the directors cut is superior. I just think sneering at the original vo, when I suspect that without it, the directors cut of the film just wouldn't have made complete sense.

I think this theory holds up to scrutiny a number of intelligent cinematic literate friends have been introduced to this film, without having previously seen the Original version, most needed some exposition, or finishedthe film needing some points explained, that weren't clear to them after watching the directors cut, but I can could answer having seen both version.

Yeah me too - it's a pretty straight-forward story really.

Well they certainly make it a lot more obvious that
    Deckard was a replicant
in the Directors Cut. And the directors cut has a far better ambigious ending, rather than the driving off into the countryside ending in the original.

It's been a very long time since I saw the original version, but after getting the Directors Cut on DVD recently I went and looked up the text of Ford's naration and I really didn't think it added anything to the story.

There's some information on the 3 Disc Special Edition here

    http://www.brmovie.com/BR_Special_Edition.htm

But it doesn't sound like we'll be seeing it anytime soon... It's a shame as the current DVD release isn't very good... it's a pretty poor transfer.

Well you're smarter than the average bear. It's just interesting that people deride the original for the vo, which aside from being a noir film device staple, adds some necessary exposition. Maybe it's Ford's emotionalist delivery. shrugs.

The delivery does leave something to be desired but the v/o in general ruins the atmosphere imho.

I saw the original first and was left wondering what all the fuss was about until I saw the directors cut. I like the fact that it leaves certin things unanswered.

In saying that, it's been AGES since I've seen the original. Might throw it on one of these days to 'see what all the fuss is about'.

I had a look at a VO-version script here, and I can't really see what it adds to the film. He doesn't really explain much that isn't already pretty obvious. It would make a difference to the overall atmosphere though, I guess it depends on whether you're a fan of the slightly-cheesy-film-noir genre or not.

Overall I prefered the director cut story wise, but I liked the voice-over of the original. Not so much because it was explaining stuff, but because I liked the extra atmosphere it added.

That gumshoe style voice-over truly sucked a big one as did the 'happy' ending (just a few mins of unused footage The Shining trivia fans). The narrative of the 1991 version was perfectly coherent in my view. The reaon the VO was added was to make things a little clearer for dumb mall rats in Idaho who were expecting a simple futuristic shoot-em-up.

    Mike.

ford hates doing ADR so any time he is asked to redub a scene or perform narration he purposely does it poorly so the crew will stick with the original recording.

hence the poor narration in blade runner.

Haven't heard anything but I think they're re-releasing the film in theatres first so it could be Christmas before we get the dvd . Hopefully sooner.
