Assistance: Buying a new PC

Hi. My five year old pc is at a crawl and starting to seriously act up. Have decided to buy new PC and looking for guidance and help please.

I will be using PC mainly for surfing and digital camcorder editing, storing photos, word, excel. No serious size files. Bit of music / dvds. Dont do any gaming.

What system should I be looking at ? I notice on Dells site that when you go to alter specs that you dont seem to be able to buy without monitor, keyboard or mouse which you can with Komplett.

    - What processor would be sufficient?
    - Look of casing not very important
    - Do I need floppy disk ?

    - What memory ?

    - Hard disk space ?

    - Graphics card ? If I dont use for gaming but will be video editing, what is the minimum ?
    - Oh yeah dvd burner ? Have no clue between different types, any guidance please. What are pros and cons of different types ?
    - Sound card ?

I want to buy a fairly decent spec as I dont want to find it obsolete in 2/3 years.

    - Also any recommendations in relation to a printer that doesnt cost an arm and leg for cartridges ?

    - Scanner on its own or combined with printer ?

I obviously wouldnt see subtle differences between one piece of hardware and another ?

Thank you for your help and guidance in advance ?

    Budget?

First off... Intel Pentium... for the video editing...
Tis better at encoding than equally priced AMD.

Seen as you can pick up a floppy drive for bout 10e ya might as well. Better to have one sitting there doin nothing for ages, than sitting there wishing you had one in a pinch... :)

I wouldn't go dell except for maybe price...

Are ya going to build or buy......??

All printer cartridges cost a fortune... thats a given. Aint gonna change either!

Memory??? Really depends on budget.. same with the other questions you asked? The dvd burner thing...? cant help ya there I'm afraid.. im waiting for hd... or will it be blu-ray? Or both......

    - Do I need floppy disk ?

For the sake of a tenner or so you may as well, but you'd be better off getting a reasonably sized USB key instead if your planning on transferring files.

If you go to their outlet store you can sometimes pick up a high end machine with a good graphics card (Ati x850 or 6800GT) and plenty of RAM at a reasonable price, if your lucky that is. As far as I know they dont come with moniters as standard so you dont have to get one. Its worth a look but for value for money a custom build is probably the way to go.

Budget up to 1,000 or say 1100 but dont wont to spend that much if I dont have too. I find Dell's site irritating to get around. I thought that the Dell Dimension 3000 for €760 (including flat panel) would fit my needs:

    Intel Pentium 4 Processor (280Ghz, 533FSB, 1MB cache),
Memory: 512MB DDR RAM, HArd Drive: 160GB HArd Drive (7200 RPM), Graphics Card: Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics,
    Optical drive: 48xcd-rw/dvd Combo drive

BUT somewhere on the site it said that the system wasnt suitable for video editing - Is it not powerful enough ?

I could upgrade some components but there wouldnt be a huge difference in getting a new PC as it is only a matter of time before the exisitng system falls flat.

If I were to add on Microsoft Office 2003 or printer this would bring the price up nearer the 1100 mark. I presume I could get a legit copy of Microsoft Office 2003 cheaper on the net and ditto with a printer ?

The above system is a starting point and maybe you have suggestions for add ons. eg is the 48xcd-rw/dvd combo drive sufficient to burn cds and dvds. No idea of difference between +/-

The differences between manufacturers products would be lost on me so probably ready made or something from site. I am trying to get my brother in law to purchase same for me through his work as they get 10% discount I think.

    Help much appreciated.

No way would I touch that for video editing. Intel extreme graphics is anything but extreme. Quite the opposite really.

You would probably need to go for more RAM too if your going to be editing.

might not be good enough because of the integrated graphics?
even a cheap graphics card would be better than that..

2.8GHz is alright... I suppose.. :) Actually it should do pretty well.

the difference between +/- is that some reader wont read a disk written in - or vice versa. though you can get multi readers and writers now. Go for the multi to be sure.

If ya look around the net you'll find better explanation of this.... Price is also a factor in there. I think "-" is more expensive but more reliable....

Hard drive is alright. Don't think you'll get much better speed(10,000rpm) without seriously upping the price. But you can pick up a 200GB HD for round e110/e150?

It's a good spec for video editing well with in your budget.
