Poker in Dublin and elsewhere?

    Hi all,

I'm going to be visiting from the U.S. next Friday, 28 October through 8 November. What is going on poker-wise during that time?

I play NL Hold 'Em, Omaha, Stud, Razz, and lots of other crazy games. I see that a lot of NLHE tourneys are played - are there ring games too? Where are the best places to play? Are there good nights coming up during my stay? Any special events I should know about?

    Thanks a lot!

    Libby

    There's this:

Dublin’s premier card room, The Merrion Casino Club , has announced details of their forthcoming Winter Festival which includes a €4,000 entry No Limit Hold’em tournament that is part of the televised European Poker Tour.

The key points are as follows:

Start times for all tournaments will be:

    Thursday 27th €400 No Limit Hold’em* 7pm

    Friday 28th €500 Omaha* 6pm

    Friday 28th €100 No Limit Hold’em* 7pm

    Saturday 29th €4,000 No Limit Hold’em Freezeout 3pm

    Sunday 30th €150 No Limit Hold’em* 6pm

*Re-buy events. Players must have lost all their chips in Hold’em tournaments to take a re-buy but only a single chip in the Omaha event. Top-ups/add-ons are available in all events apart from the €4,000 Hold’em Freezeout.

Seats for all events will be sold on a first come first serve basis and those that wish to pre-pay (recommended) can do so by contacting Charles@merrioncasinoclub.com

Field sizes will be limited to 250 players, with Friday’s Omaha taking priority over the Hold’em. That tournament’s capacity will be limited to the balance of the remaining tables.

Dinner will be served daily before the start of play.

The EPT main event will be a two day tournament with the final commencing at 4pm on the Sunday at the RDS Centre.

    AND ALSO THIS:

Leinster Cup EXPECTED PRIZE POOL OF €80K

The ring games are mainly all pot limit hold 'em and pot limit omaha. The Merrion will be full of action due to the festival being on, there might even be a couple of no limit games going on. Definitely head in to check it out.

Thanks for all the responses! I'm excited about checking some of these places out.

However, I am a bit poor, so I doubt I'll be playing anything with a buyin of over €50. Is the lowest limit cash game to be found €1-€2? Are the only places to play casinos? In the states, we have really fun pub poker nights - is there anything like that in Ireland?

They occasionally have pub poker nights but they're normally a complete waste of time with the organisers taking a lot for themselves. The casinos aren't really casinos though, more like cardrooms. They're very relaxed and nothing like what you find in the states. The Merrion is laid out over 4 floors in an old Georgian house, it's pretty cool. Also with the festival on the restaurant will be busy and there'll be alot of beer going around. I'd say you'll probably be able to find a €1-€2 game in the Merrion, if not you definitely will in the Fitzwilliam which is only about 200 yards away.

It should be pointed out Libby that an Irish Casino is nothing like you'll find in Vegas or Atlantic City.:D

In what way do you mean?

I've never gambled in Atlantic City or Vegas, actually (yet!) but I have been to some other casinos (on Indian land so it's legal).

What are the Fitz and Merrion like? Is this where all the players go? Do people have a lot of home games, too? Also, what are the laws around gambling in Ireland? (In the U.S. it varies from state to state, but in DC you can have a home game as long as there is no rake, otherwise you have to have a gaming license, which you won't get unless it's for charity.)

Also - I am reading that both the Fitz and Merrion have freerolls, but I don't see them listed on their websites. When are they?

    Thanks!

The Merrion is in a house and The Fitz is in a church. The $50 scalps comp in the Fitz on the Friday night is usually well attended. 70 + people. [It's + one rebuy so it costs €105 I think if you take up the rebuy] The freerolls are usually for entry into a larger competition so they may be of no use to you... best to check out their websites.

I think the lads mean dont be expecting the grandeur of cardrooms in Atlantic city & Vegas. The regulars are a good bunch. But beware of the 'string bet' and the intended raise with a single chip thats not verbally announced because these mistakes will be eagerly picked up on. also if you win a massive pot dont chant "U.S.A....U.S.A.....U.S.A" ...only joking!

But the link below will explain some tips and stuff

    Libby,

For the Fitzwilliam, the freerolls are the games listed on Thursdays and Sundays as "No-Limit Texas Hold-em Satellite for the monthly €270 tournament". As suggested, there are several tickets up for grabs for the end-of-month €270 game. They are free to enter, but rebuys and top-ups cost €10 each. A word of warning, there can be some crazy play!

As far as I know, if you win a ticket, you can't take cash as a replacement, so they may not be any use to you. You can, however, sell the ticket at a reduced rate to some of the regulars.

There are two very good lower limit tournaments in the Fitzwilliam:
    1. Sunday NLHE Freezeout €30+3 game at 4.30pm
    2. Tuesday NLHE Double chance €50+5 at 8.30pm

    Thanks again for the responses!

Rounders, thanks for the tips, however I do in fact know how to behave myself in public. ;-)

Also, some of my poker buddies are um, how shall I say it? Poker Nazis. Meaning, that even at a friendly, casual home game, they will behave as though we are at a casino. So I don't string bet and the like. But thank you for the warning. Glad to hear Irishfolk take their cards seriously.

Oh, and if anyone else is chanting "USA USA!" I will probably think they are mental.

Though we did invent the game... ;-)
