Everytime i switch on my pc it has lost all my settings, desktop background, cookies, themes etc. i got an error message about virtual memory and that seems to make sense. i wouldnt mind but now my msn is starting to screw up too. besides that the pc is very slow and programs freeze regularly.
luckily it doesnt seem to be deleting things which are actually stored on the hard drive like mp3s, documents etc.
i havent enough money to get it fixed or get a new pc so if anyone could even give me a temporary solution to this id be grateful.

what version of Windows are you running? if you dont know anything about virtual memory, just let Windows operate the settings for you. I would backup stuff you want off the hard drive. The settings things could be the little CMOS battery inside your computer, it could be fading. They are normally easy to replace, they are just like a giant watch battery, usually just clip into place on the motherboard.

Yes the version of Windows would be helpful.

Hmm, those symtoms do sound like memory problems but i've never heard of virtual memory causing problems to this degree before. Are you short on physical memory as well?

If your comfortable enough with doing it, i'd suggest you try manually moving your swap file to another partition and probably set its size as well say 2.5 x your actual RAM. At least that'll help rule out some old swap file state causing Windows to go nuts.

If it's not a 2000 / XP system chances are as well that age might have gotten to it as 9x / ME systems are notoriously unreliable in the long run. Hence formatting the OS partition and reinstalling Windows might be the way to go.

I'd rule out a possible physical memory problem as well:

Could possibly be a virus as well. Whatever anti-virus you've got make sure it's uptodate.

Either way i don't think the PC is a complete loss.

Im on XP and my norton antivirus is out of date so that may be the problem. I increased the size of the paging file and that seems to have sorted out some of the problems but the pc is still running fairly slow. Don't think i need to reinstall windows or make partitions though cos ive plenty of hard disk space.
    Thanks for the advice anyway.

It's most likely a result of virus, or more likely spyware.
Boot into Safe Mode - does the issue occurr here?

No: Download anti-virus & spyware software. Run the removal tools from Safe Mode.

Yes: Disable startup items (except AV and AS) from MSCONFIG (Start -> Run.. -> msconfig -6 -> Click DISABLE ALL. Reboot and test..
