My First PC Build - Graphics Adapter Question

I recently bought an upgrade kit from komplett.ie, which included an EpoX motherboard (http://www.epox.nl/products/view.php?product_id=257), 512MB RAM and a 2.6GHz P4 Socket LGA775 Processor. I also bought a 400W PSU to power the system.

OK so the idea was to upgrade an existing PC (use old HDD, FDD, CD-ROM, AGP Graphics Card, PCI modem etc...). The first surprise I had was that the AGP (an ATI card) graphics card on my old system didn't fit the AGP slot on the new motherboard. I soon discovered that the ATI card was of the AGP 3.0V spec and the new mboard only accepts AGP cards of the 1.5V spec.

OK I thought I can throw in an old low-spec PCI graphics card for the time being. So I plugged in an old Cirrus Logic (prolly only 4-8MB) graphics card into a PCI slot and with everything else cabled up tried to boot up the new kit. The system sounds like it is booting up, fans spinning, sound of hard drive spinning up, but I have nothing on monitor. Switching the graphics card to another PCI slot made no difference.

Is it possible for some motherboards to ONLY support graphics output through their AGP slot? If so I guess this is my problem, that it is just ignoring the graphics card in the PCI slot?

Any other theories on why I'm not getting any graphics output would be appreciated!

    Cheers,
    jAH

You might need to set it to PCI in the bios etc. But that would kinda odd, usually they auto detect

First thing i would think of, is the card working? You said it is old and all...

Thanks for the info. The PCI graphics card definitely works as I took it out of an old functioning PC (P1-133). At least now I know that all motherboards support both AGP and PCI for graphics output.

So the issue must be somewhere with the build ... or else a faulty motherboard?

I am trying boot-up with the bare minimum of peripherals connected, 512MB RAM, P4 CPU and Heatsink, IDE HDD with OS installed and the graphics card. Everything is powered up from the PSU (20-pin and 4-pin into motherboard) and appropriate power cable to HDD which is connected to motherboard via IDE cable. Does any of this sound wrong ??

    Cheers,
    jAH

I'm gonna guess that you remembered to plug the cable into the card
Is there a video connector on the board itself? If so, try unplugging your PCI card and booting that way.
