I had that on an my old panasonic on AV2. Basically one of the sockets should have 2 modes, an S-Video mode and normal, so switch between till one works :)

You may also have to change from s-video out to composite out in the graphics card settings, or vice versa.

Because it's a common issue..and it has worked for me before (Several times)...
Not entirely sure of the reasoning: phase shift? The basic difference between PAL and NTSC is frequency ... common result in trying to identify one as the other will lead to loss of some or all colours..

It could be a number of things (NTSC vs PAL) but the most likely is that the SCART socket is not wired for s-video. s-video separates colour from brightness on 2 separate feeds, however the SCART pin arrangement uses the same pins for composite as for the lumincance signal for s-video.

The result is that the TV shows a black and white picture.

Plug the s-video into an s-video socket on the TV. If the tv has no s-video socket then it is very unlikely it will accept s-video on SCART.

If the graphics card has a composite out then use that, if the card only has a DIN, it may have a couple of non standard pins and use a converter.

If however your video card only outputs s-video and the TV doesn't accept s-video then no cheap plug/converter can fix this, you need active signal conversion equipment to convert s-video to composite.

    In short, what pH said.

I went through five (yes, five) different s-video to SCART leads before I got one to work. It is not related to PAL vs. NTSC, it's related to the wiring of the connector.

I got one from s-video.com and it works a dream.

Yep I had forgotten about the old capacitor trick to convert s-video to composite, which is indeed available premade in a cheap cable.

first of all - thx folks.

attached is a pic of the back of the media centre - graphics card on left.
It only has the 7 pin connector.

From reading all of your replies - I take it I need the s-video to scart conn that Ton D talks about.

    Tom - is this the one I need ? -- http://www.s-video.com/svideoscart.html

Yes, the 7-pin, black round connector is s-video, and the cable you have linked to is the one I got.

A Secam output will also give b&w on a PAL set.

    thanks Tom :)

Well the 7 pin din normally means that your video card puts out a composite signal on 2 of the 3 non-standard pins (s-video standard has 4 pins). What video card do you have? did it come with a small converter that has s-video on one end and RCA on the other?

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 1,928 Mod ✭✭✭✭karltimber

    Thanks PH

tried the converter from s-video to rca and it works ---colour :D:D

ordered the specific scart cable anyhow as I need a second one --one for dvd and one for the media pc.

thx folks for all the help.
