what are the benefits?? I see quite a few people here have a dual setup.
is the same picture on each one, or is the picture halved between them,
and if it is have you not got 4 inches of unviewable area in the middle of your
picture. is there something Im missing??

it's handy to have word open and excel open full screen at the same time, it's like having a bigger desk, just more room to work and less clutter.

Personally I find its one of the most productive boosting things you can do. I can be coding in one window, and running/previwing a website in the other. Or coding and have a database open in the other. Or if I'm going through emails and logging calls, tracking bugs etc, I can be fixing in one window, and reading the bugs, replying in another. For other work I can be reading instruction in one window, or reading reference material, and carrying it out on the other monitor.
If I'm editing music, or video, I can have it running in one window, monitoring how its going, while I work away on the other window. Basically its like having a really large desktop. But its really useful. Especially when you trying to work between two screens. Everyone in our office has two screens. Once you get used to it, its very hard to go back.

So I can watch a pron dvd and post on boards at the same time without alt tabbing......Hmmm interesting concept. :D

or watch the tele and backup dvd's at the same time..

I presume you need 2 video cards yes?

any other techie stuff I need to know?

just like Dempsey said, you can do it with a dual head GFX card. Most pci express cards nowadays have dual sockets so u can put two montiers in it.

    have fun anyways!!

It depends what you do. If you just use a computer to play games and read emails its not a huge advantage.

But as already noted if you are coding it is fantastic. Likewise if you are comparing 2 documents (which I do alot), writing HTML, or do anything where you do a lot of cutting and pasting it is invaluable.

I keep a desktop with dual monitors just for having the screen space. Otherwise I would use my laptop.

I use it for video editing so I can have the timeline nice and long and also so I can have my composer and sequence monitiors on one side and my bins on the other.

I do quite a bit of photo editing, and some HTML coding.
With regards to photo editing - could I have one monitor profiled with adobe RGB for editing, and the other sRGB and uncalibrated for web browsing and the likes?
How does the duel system work? How do you tell which monitor to display what, etc?
    Thanks.

I do it so that I can watch a Divx on one screen, while internetting/typing on the other.

Originally I had it for Video editing.

so does everyone have two agp slots on the mobo or are ye using one agp graphics card and one PCI? One of mates said not to get the same make graphics cards cuz if you do the drivers for each would conflict with one another, is that true?

Coding and watching divx at the same time in work :D

Have a dual screen card myself in work and at home but i only have 1 monitor at home. 1 note different res monitors can get annoying if you have diff monitors. Anyone else here use Ultramon?

And when i am working i usually have the IDE open in one screen and SQL etc open in the second one.

Motherboards will only ever have one AGP slot. You can get a Dual Monitor Setup by getting a GFX card with two video connectors (Dual Head).

If your GFX card doesnt have a second connector you can install a PCI GFX card and setup Dualview that way.

    You'll find some info here...

I use ultramon. To be honest I found dual monitors a pain until I started using it. Couldn't work with out it now. You can have up to 10 monitors and more if you use other techniques. See some here http://www.realtimesoft.com/multimon/gallery.asp

Heres some wallpapers for your multimonitors (you have to register)
