If the software you are using is legit, did you use XPSP1 then upgrade or was it an XPSP2 Full install?

I only recently been asked that activation question when installing Office. Never seen any errors or refusals. Always wondered how well it works in reality.

Try developing a restore strategy around Windows activation, We've been onto microsoft about the grief we're having with it, not that theyre any use. Those gits have some nerve tying their product down to hardware in an enterprise environment

Yes that also happened to me just actually read it properly, SO i have been told its a crack that activates windows but doesnt actually work properly so after 60 days it does what your having the problem with the only way around it is a reinstall and use a Legit key, rather than a crack that doesnt work.....

In the corporate enviroment I've used "select" versions which don't seem to need activation. We never had a problem with it anyway. Where I work now, we're using the one's that came with the machine so again, we're not having problems with it. Its not that usually to be swapping hardware in a corporate workstation.

I have a german windows Xp that i got with my laptop, I just used a english version of windows but used the german key...

You can't change installed languages in XP, i.e. if you install a german or chinese or french etc. version, thats what XP will be in.

MUI packs, like they did for Gaeilge support will be the norm for Vista, so (hopefully), one version will do for everyone.

I'm having a problem similar to this too... I reinstalled My XP pro a few days ago and went to activate it but my old serial no wouldn't work.. Noe I have a little Icon in my system tray telling me I have 28 days left till activation..I'll just have to ring MS I guess..

It is when you're mapping out a disaster recovery strategy :(

I'm curious what you swap out that triggers activation. I know theres limits as to what you can swap but I have no idea what they are. How does your disaster recovery effect the activation?

Totally different servers in our hotsite (so everythings swapped, in a manner of speaking) with a recovery from tape to simulate a real disaster.

OS rebuilds fine but the windows activiation kicks in right away which is a pain in the neck as you then have to activate over the phone and your key will only activate this way so many times (seven i think). The real kicker however is that , with our new bare metal recovery software, the OS will look for activation on first logon (or it'll kick you back out) HOWEVER when you try acitvate it just brings up an error message and thats it, your server is useless. Microsoft have looked into hoping that they can blame the recovery software but they've yet to prove anything. licence activation was always going to be a mess IMO

If it an exact backup why isn't it activated already? Why does it require activation after restore?

rockxp will back up your activation file (google for it)

I think the issue is that he is restoring onto a different machine, hence the activation kicks in (as activation is tied to the specific hardware.)
