free anti-virus software for mac?

i was looking this up and i read a few things claiming that virus's don't usually affect Mac OS X, because of it not being so popular so people don't design virus's to attack it, and because it's a good operating system. is this true? if i ever get the internet to actually work on my g4 power book, will i need anti-virus…

if i ever get the internet to actually work on my g4 power book, will i need anti-virus software? or will i be fine without it, considering i'm smart about attachments and downloads?
