Ok, Donn't take offence but i'nm going to assume that you are a wee bit confused.

You don't actually telnet onto a irc server. You telnet to another computer and then run an irc client, typically ircii or *****X from a unix shell which then connects to irc.

eg. where i am, to talk on irc, i telnet to a machine that has direct access, then from there to a machine that has ircii installed on it. I then run ircii on that machine and can use irc. I could use irc on the first machine, but it's not my account.... follow ?

so funny that it is actually true?

you can telnet on to an IRC server

    1) the server may have an port open for telnetters ( not all nets do )

    2) gotta know you IRC proto Cmds very well :-) just connect and pretend you are and IRC client ( not actually a j/k ) same way as if you telnet to a mailserver to send email by hand with your HELO and stuff

    --

ircII? your a bit of a sadist aren't you
ircII is what people use when they want the pain try *****X much better unix client
