Jeez poor Connacht. Wouldn't call myself their biggest fan, don't follow them really, but there's no way they deserved to be beaten by the referee like that. What a retard. I hope his mother's proud of the anally retentive a$$hole she brought into this world. He ruined an already pretty poor game of rugby.

Didn't see it....but I mean how long were they throwing the ball back and forth, dummying and so on?

If it was more than 1 minute, I can understand a ref taking action...I'm not clear on the rules for something like this, but otherwise you could just get a 22 in the 41st minute, and throw it around dummying untill the game is over, so obviously there is a rule against time wasteing, that is open to interpretation by a ref.

If it was arond a minute, I would see no other actions than a penalty against.

[Edit] Having said that, the ref should give fair warning before a call like that..."If you don't take it now I will award a peno against"...in other words...get on with it.[/edit]

about 2 passes I reckon. nothing out of the ordinary to be honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,958 ✭✭✭✭RuggieBear

still i reckon the worst refereeing decsion i've ever seen was when leinster played edinburgh a few seasons a back:

leinster winning comfortably going into injury time. edinburgh mount a last ditch attack and spin it wide. Ball is blatently passed forward. Leinster centre quinlan shouts at the ref "did you not see that you blind wanker". Edinburgh score try and conversion and ref awards them a penalty from the halfway line which they get as last kick of match and win the game :(

it really is unbelievable that these referees who do this week in week out don't know the rules. there is no qualms about being beaten by a better team, but when you are beaten by the decision making of the referee, you have a major reason to be pissed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,512 ✭✭✭Sundy

I didnt see the game so i wont judge the ref on his decision to call connacht for time wasting but i will judge hime for getting the penalty wrong.

    Law 10.1 Unfair Play states:

    (b) Time-wasting. A player must not intentionally waste time.
    Penalty: Free Kick

So it should have been a free kick for the ospreys and connacht should still have won.
    Fine the referee i say!

I think that bit is hilarious coz the annoucers at the Ulster game were saying he would defo be playing....when it was obvious to evryone that it was just BS to try and attract a bigger crowd

Seems to have worked as they reckon that the cardiff game this savo will be a sell out.

Hope there are lots of dissapointed blowins when Lomu doesn't make an appearance :D

well they could complain and make sure the ref is suspended/punished/shot but at the end of the day the referee is the sole arbitur of the rules and if he says tries will be worth 10 points then tries are worth 10 points...

Does he not have to abide by the rules of the competition?

:D Probably, but at the end of the day, the ref can more or less "interprete" the rules any way he wants, while he's on the field and if that means giving a penalty for timewasting instead of a free, then he can

Scottish refs seem to be out to disgrace themselves this weekend, another awful performance at tonights match between leinster and cardiff. According to the ref the ball doesnt have to go ten meters after kick off! He also missed a couple of forward passes and never really got control of discipline

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,278 ✭✭✭kenmc

twas funny listening to the newstalk 106 commentry while i was at the game, they were giving him a right old rollicking (and deservedly so).

I didnt see the entire match but I saw one incident when Keith Gleeson took the ball after a restart within the 10m line and knocked it on, according to the rules if a member of the receiving team takes the ball within the 10 meters then play on.

I didnt see enough of the match to make a comment on the rest of it!

Yeah thats the rule all right. That said though you should always play the whistle too, so by leaving the ball as a defender you're relying on the referee making the right call on that if an attacker (kicking off team) gets to it first. I think it's a stupid rule - it should be rekicked/scrum option even if the defenders touch it. Thats the way it's always been played when I've been playing anyway, so I dunno if the refs I have had don't know the rules, or if they've changed...

I'm an Ospreys fan so I thought the ref had an excellent game. I don't know what you're all complaining about.

Apparently he penalised Connacht under Law 10.2(a) and not 10.2(b) which states:
    10.2 UNFAIR PLAY
    (a) Intentionally Offending. A player must not intentionally infringe any
Law of the Game, or play unfairly.

    Penalty: Penalty Kick

A penalty try must be awarded if the offence prevents a try that would
probably otherwise have been scored. The player who intentionally
offends must be either admonished, or cautioned that a send off will
result if the offence or a similar offence is committed, or sent-off. After a
caution a player is temporarily suspended from the match for a period of
ten minutes playing time. After a caution, if the player commits the same
or similar offence, the player must be sent-off.

So he was correct in his decision but still absurdly harsh.

That can't possibly be correct! In that case you could give a penalty for any offence since breaking any rule could be construed as 'intentionally' infringing. In fact time wasting by its very nature is intentional in which case there's no point in having a free kick as the penalty for it.
