Lexmark Printer

I recently bought a Lexmark Z517 colour inkjet printer because I had a few hundred maps to print for a sports club I'm in. The reason I bought it was because it's cheap (and because I had previously owned one) so I'm not too bothered that it broke but I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me what happened or if it can be fixed.

I got the printer new and printed my 300 A4 colour maps with no problems but a few weeks later when I went to use it again it only prints the yellow in stops and starts (i.e. it prints fine for about a quarter of the page and then continues printing in three colours but not yellow). This is also the reason my old printer stopped working.

The problem is not the cartridge because I can change that with no affect. I have been refilling the ink cartridges from a bottle but it also doesn't work properly for new cartridges.

Has anyone seen this before or have any insight?

are all the cartridges you have tried refilled ones ? if they are its most likely the ink you are using to refill the yellow is clogging up the print head , with refill inks the quality can vary and cause problems , try a new cartridge , you can get cheap ones in tesco

"..but it also doesn't work properly for new cartridges."
    He has tried that.

OP: Presumably you tried these new cart's after using the refills first? Perhaps it's clogged up somewhere else in the printer (This would suggest why it's happened to both printers..).. not sure where though..

What cartridges are you using ?
Just in case you don t know, photo cartridges don t have any yellow (only black, red and blue) so since you have to use them along with color cartridges, the yellow can run out very quickly..
Did you also check how cartridges are recognised in the piece of software.. in the lexmark part of All programs ? the PC might not give the right order to the printer and waste all the yellow ...

    Thanks for the ideas

I don't think so. The ink doesn't go into the printer. Straight from the cartridge to the page.

The cartridge definatly has plenty of yellow ink in it (refilling the yellow was obviously the first thing I tried). The problem isn't particular to yellow because in the old printer eventually all the colours stopped working (I still have it and black still works fine).
The only thing I could think of was that by printing a large volume all in one go I melted some connection. A loose connection would explain why it ocasionally works. I don't think that that's the case though because loose connections usually respond to a good shaking which this does not.
