    Heya,

I want to set up an online webstore, its going to be used to sell sailing equipment, iv never set one up before but have a good knowledge of programming in java and iv been able to make sites before and set up domain names and hosts etc, but is it complicated to setup a store, is there any good tutorials out there? And is there enough freeware/open source software around to do it?

    Easy way to do it

Linux Hosting Server with SSH and FTP access
    PHP / MySQL
osCommerce. Although it's in beta, it has been used for years. I have used it to create online shops for various big businesses. Namely one of the big Mobile operators. It is highly configurable and also accepts Credit Card payemtns among others.

Your all set. Costs are only webhosting domain registration etc. Being a developer, configuring this should be NO problem. It is very easy. Knowing linux and php would be of help but a lot of the hosting people out there install and configure osCommerce for you.

    Happy days.

there are a few co's out there that sell ready made templates for oscommerce so if you are techie minded you can setup using one of these and it makes the whole thing look very professional.

To sell online you need to remember to keep the shipping costs down, excellent photographs and good descriptions with sizes and dimensions and weights where possible. Remember it's all the customer has to go on.

    Hope this helps
