    Direct obeservation,generic:

    Pro:
    -Simplicity
-Provides deep team understanding usage issues
    -Captures user's emotional issues (Frustration,etc.)

    Con:
    -Too easily biased
-Too easy to measure qualatitive (-v- quantative)
-Usually costly (In terms of time)
-In reality, the observed users are rarely a full and true representation of the user population!

"..using direct observation and the study of documentation.. " <- two seperate things,or Direct Observation of documentation study? something's potentially lost in grammaer here.. or maybe it's the shiny thing distracting me..over..there...

One advantage of the direct observation is that you can see what actually happens rather then what is supposed to happen.

Re. RTFM does anyone ever do this before they hit a problem.
