Im trying to fix my sister's laptop here and its doing something very odd.

The laptop is set to go into standby mode when the screen is closed down, which it does...

But, for some reason when you open the lid, the screen stays off, theres a little hum from the harddrive and thats it.. you can press what ya like, but the screen stays off and theres no change in noise from the HD..

Ive checked all the Hibernation settings etc, and everything seems fine.

    Any ideas?? Cheers!

This happens my 8600 the odd time...I've put it down to there being a lot of apps or windows running when the machine hibernates...only thing that fixes it is hitting the power key and fresh booting.
Your problem is stand-by related...are there any peripherals attached? Some USB devices (and sometimes their drivers) can mess with systems trying to go into stand-by...don't know if that's your problem or not.

Last thing....have you tried the settings for screen turning off due to inactivity? Could be the machine is coming back on fromn stand-by and the screen may have timed out on it's own timer settings and that the machine is confused as to whther the screen should turn on or not.

    My Dell 9300 does that.

I think you have to "tell" the laptop you want to use it again so I press the power button after I open the lid. PC powers up and I get the "this system is locked and can only be unlocked by whover".

Yeah but when I press the power button nothing happens. Ive changed the setting to hibernate now and that works fine, just takes a little longer to come back to life. XP .. Ya gotta love it.
