I was just goin to buy aPSP for xmas but now i am not so sure.It costs 250euros and the games are sixty.Bit of a joke if you ask me and i think it would be fairly pointless to buy one cos you cant afford to purchase 1 game for the PSP and another for the Ps1.And the playstation 3 is out next year.

Have a gander there. Tis the Playstation forum.

I have one and it's great. Especially if you commute. It plays reasonably good games.

But the real advantage of it is that it plays movies either from disc or xvid type files from the memory stick

unfortunately, it will also come with a tighter firmware which stops you using your psp for some really nifty things like emulators and playing copies of your umd games from your memory stick which really helps battery life.

    I'm afraid Sparky that i'm usually on a buses/darts head to/from Bray

Must say that if I commuted, it'd be a no brainer...hacked PSP for the win.

    yup.
I'd write a script for my computer to conmpress/convert whatever xvids of new tv I rss down, and automatically load it onto the psp overnight.

Does the thing have a loudspeaker?
'twould be fun to play lost season 2 on it on a packed dart.
    :)

yeah it has a loud speaker and its very simple to put movies across onto

I've got a PSP, and I've about a 30/45 minute commute in the morning, and more in the afternoon cause of traffic.

I've actually found myself skipping buses that take a quicker router, and taking buses that go long routes just so that I can have more time on the bus to play the PSP :D

Nobrainer if you commute, the time literally flies, and you're more than likely going to miss your stop more than once :)

To be honest I don't see the point of a PSP.

Firstly the price of games is a bit a joke.

Also the size of the thing doesn't really make it all that portable, at least not in a way that's especially convenient. I wouldn't carry a phone or iPod that size so I'm not going to carry a PSP in addition to my phone or iPod just so I can watch movies or play games. And another thing, watching movies on the go? Sorry but the last place I'd like to watch a movie is in a car or on a train. The hype may be great but I don't see it breaking any new ground beyond the niche of hardcore gamers that it already appeals to.

Hardly a niche. Sales have been pretty impressive from what I understand.

    As Khannie said - I don't think it's a niche either.

I don't carry it in my hand, in my pocket, or my jacket. I have a backpack (god bless Jan Sport eh?) that I carry everywhere, useful as hell, and not heavy at all. So I just dump the PSP in that whenever I can't use it. As soon as I hit a seat on a bus, straight out it comes and away I go.
It's certainly too big to be something that's comparable to an iPod/phone for portability, but it's not as bad as you make it out to be.

I do agree that the prices of the games are a tad ridiculous though. But with that said - there's a massive HomeBrew userbase that develop applications of all sorts for use on the PSP (legally too as far as I know ... which isn't very far I'll admin) - everything from VNC over wireless to control your pc, to using the built in IR device as a remote control for Sony TVs.

Pros outweigh the cons at the moment, even if it's price is pretty steep

Not buying one *ever*, or anything SONY for that matter.

    (i) after all the indies did for SONY with PS1 and PS2 over the last 10 years, in terms of building their market and the hype with parallel import and whatnot, the legal wrangles SONY made re. the PSP imports in EU pre-official release were totally out-of-order, especially considering the negligible impact (all things considred) of PSP import sales in Europe.

(ii) as in the case of -say- the iPod video, other companies do other products with pretty much the same features, and pretty much better to boot. Granted, not the gaming - but gaming on the go isn't really my thing, so not bothered in the least.

    *shrug*
    Plays Games. (online too)
Plays movies. (UMD and free convertor)
    Plays MP3s.
    Internet browser
Podcasting support. Means you can stream internet radio/video to it.

and they keep adding stuff every OS upgrade.

    *shrug back @ ya* :D:p

Both my Izzi Pro (7 years old, winCE 3, eBay £50) and my Fujitsu Point 1600 (about 8 years old, win98SE, eBay £70, tablet PC) have touchscreen 10+ " TFT, no moving parts (that break down and/or drain juice) in the case of the Izzi, and the Izzi battery lasts over 7 hours / Point 1600 last just over 2 hours.

    They both
    Plays Games. (online too)
    Plays movies. (mpeg/avi)
    Plays MP3s.
Internet browser and email, IRC, Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc, etc.
The Izzi also records voice at touch of button and can be used as a lappy with full keyb or tablet with OSD keyboard.
    etc, etc.

Don't anyone try to convince me of the PSP virtues because of all those 'wonderful functions' it can do (good or bad, irrelevant). My point is that there are just so many other devices out there (and have been for such a long time) that can do anything-and-everything, that the PSP is just a fad: a portable PS2, with easier WAN connectivity out-of-the-box and not much more.

It *just* about justifies itself if you're big into 3D gaming, as in terms of value for money, you'd still be hard-pressed to out-do the GBA SP (which, incidentally, also does everythign the PSP does, mp3s and movies and all, except the online stuff), and for online access (as in web-browsing), there's much, much better and much, much cheaper hardware out there.

    My very anti-SONY (I admit it) €0.02 :)
