speaker positioning

have a set of tannoy reveal monitors in my studio - anyone know the best postion for mixing -- ie height ( i suppose ear level when sitting down ? ) , distance apart, distance back behind console etc --- also wondering if they are best mounted on stands or on the wall ( i am most likely going for the wall ) --- also was planning on putting them up higher than ear level and aiming them down toward the console

actually what i had planned to do seems a lot like what is done with the "big" speakers in a regular studio - however in those studios they have "nearfield" monitors too, which i dont -- does anyone know what the purpose of nearfield monitors is and what i would be loosing if i mount the speakers on the wall ( a bit higher up, further back and a bit further apart than regular nearfields)

    thanks

From what I know, your head and the two speakers should form a triangle on the same plain, that is, the same level.

What Fey said. You really just want a clear line-of-sight from the speaker to your ear, all forming an equlateral triangle. Don't aim them down at a console, you'll just get a lot of reflections off the console which will defeat the purpose.

Here is some good tips on making the most of your speakers and your room (which effects the way your speakers sound)...

BTW you are better off using the Reveals for their intended purpose: as a nearfield monitor, up close and personal...

Aye. The 2 studio control rooms I've been in, the monitors were aimed right at the engineer's head while he was sitting down.
