Ok well the problem is, my computer won't reach the log in screen. i'm running XP professional and when i turn it on it gets to the screen where the little bar moving across and the XP logo are. Then after that it just restarts automatically. and it just keeps going over and over again. i can't get into my bloody computer!!

ive tried booting it up from the XP cd and when it gets to the blue screen i press 'R' to do a windows repair. but its different to when you do it in windows because it does it in dos. so when i have put in the administrator password it just leaves me at C:windows or something like that. what command do i need to put in to do a repair? what am i suppose to do? How can i get around this boot up problem its really frustrating me now!

I appreciate any help at all..thanks!

yeah ive put in 'help' to get up all the commands but i don't know what one to do and i don't know what ones are relevant to my problem. it dosn't explain really what they do. what will i do if i can get into computer on safe mode? where will that leave me then?

When you get into the boot menu from F8, tell it to use that last known good configuration. That often works.

same thing happened to me. what new software have you installed recently? Press F8 at the start up and pick last known good configuration... should work then

If you can get into Safe Mode...
    A. You can try removing added hardware, and doing a L.K.G.C. as suggested above.
    B. If that doesn't work (With new hardware removed): Do a System Restore (After booting into Safe Mode)

    C. If that still doesn't work, it has to be a Repair...
You might still have the more user-friendly option of repair..Do you get these options:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
    when you boot from CD?
If so, chances are you chose to Repair USING THE RECOVERY CONSOLE ('R)... DON'T! Press ENTER instead...
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations, etc.
Select the Installation that you want to repair.
    Then, press R !

If you want to repair Win XP what you actually need to do is to follow the steps to install it. Install it on the same drive as existing install. It will then detect the existing installation and ask if you wish to repair it. It should then perform a repair. But as other people have suggested, try safe mode or last known good config first.

The Recovery console is a whole different ball game.
