I recently got a new gibson Les paul 3 weeks ago and now for some reason it sounds really bad. Was working really good up untill a week ago. It could be the amp!! Not really sure.

Tried it on my friend amp who has a les paul and same amp but not much difference. Started messing with the action and pick-up height but still no good.

Does any1 know what the problem could be and where to get it set up properly?

Define "sounds really bad". TBH, it's doubtful that if it just suddenly changed sound that it'd be the action. Possibly a loose wire could be the cause.

No need to panic dude, guitars are living, breathing things (no really, they are!). Unless you snapped the neck in two, it can be fixed!

Is it the playability or the tone that's worrying you?

Well its sound really treblely and fuzzy on gain and really bassy on clean. The treble pickup sound weaker that the bass one aswell.

I think it could be the amp tho.

Is it possible that there is a loose wire after only 3 weeks?

Dude, if you tried it on another amp, it's not the amp. And given Gibson's recent QA problems, it's quite possible it's a loose wire. Open her up and have a look see.

    1. Get a screwdriver
    2. Remove the screws from the electronics panel
    3. Remove panels.
    4. Look for loose wires.
    5. Report back to us

This may be a stupid question, but did you change the strings?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 277 ✭✭Shanegggg

No its not the strings. Put new strings on her and still the same problem.

Opened her up and had a look around. Compared to a wiring diagram and everything looks grand. No loose wires. Didn't check the pickups tho!! Haven't a clue how and that would involve taking off strings.

Any 1 know a good place for repairs and where to set it up properly?

Is it a completely stock Les Paul?
Have you tried a different guitar through your amp?
Have you tried your guitar through a different amp (not the same type of amp)?
    Have you tried different cables?
Have you checked for crackling in the pots?
    What Les Paul is it?

Just twist the tone pots while the guitar is plugged in and listen for crackling. And try a different cable, just in case.

Did the guitar suddenly just sound different?

A Friend of mine had an SG that had these symptoms. I think he got it replaced.
The problem was in the pickup wiring. Loose connection, or something shorted. If you rattled around the pickup it cleaned itself up. Dont know if this is the problem, but it sounds similar. If you dont know much about the guitar wiring and dont have a friend who does, than Id recommend going to a music shop and asking them to take a look at it.

A Gibson Les Paul is too expensive to **** around with if you dont know what youre doing.

Thx for the advice. Going to bring in to a dealer.

Just 1 problem bought it from coda music!! Any1 know where i can bring it in dublin r do i have to send it back to england?

Whats the story with the warranty on a Gibson Les Paul?

Call them, tell them there's a problem with the guitar and you want it sorted here. AFAIK Waltons are the only authorised Gobson dealers here, so you may be bringing it into them, unless you want to pay for a luthier here to look at it.

All the warranty information should have come with the guitar. Does it have a manufacturer's warranty? If not, you have to take it up with the shop you bought it from.

If it's borked through no particular fault of yours then the shop is obliged to replace it, irrespective of whether it came with a warranty. The manufacturer has absolutely no liability to you unless otherwise stated - your deal is with the shop.
