I Have a virus on my home PC which i cant get rid of. I have tried scanning with Scandoc and the MS anti-virus software downloaded from microsoft. When i run the scans it tells me i have over 100 threats and when i remove then and go online i can us the net for about 2 mins and then the virus comes back and i have to run the virus scanner again. I am seriously considering re-installing XP and starting from scratch. Has anyone else had this problem before??

Oh yeah, when the adware/spyware starts it always says something about winupdate.exe.

    Any help would be apreciated!!

Did it report the name of the virus?
    Any service packs installed?

Not sure waht you mean by service packs. Each time I run the scan it gives me the name of about 15 harmful viruses and when I clear them everything seems ok. Then when i reconnect it seems to start all over again. I think its down to this winupdate.exe thing. What would ye recommend?

Tricky one. There's a few viruses that infect winupdate.exe

    http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_SDBOT.ER
    http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.hllw.warpigs.b.html
    http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/winupdate/
    ...are just three.

Seems you have no firewall so as soon as you reconnect, bam, infected again.
Windows XP SP1 (134mb) inclued a firewall. (afaik)
    Try Sygate or Zonealarm (free)

    So, what would I do?
Well i'd probably wipe the PC and reinstall Xp but try this first:

Download one the the above firewalls.
Remove the viruses like you've been doing and disconnect from the net.
    Install firewall and reboot machine.
Reconnect net cable and see if the viruses/worms return.

If you don't already have it, get Service Pack 2 for XP if you get a chance.

Thanks Edge! Didnt even think about a firewall to stop myself being infected again. I'll Try out your recommendations over the next few days to see if it helps. If Not I think i'll have to wipe the PC and re-install. Do you know if there are any online guides on wiping and reinstalling?? Is it difficult to do?
