    Hey all,
After a few months of not using her laprop, my sister has forgotten her logon password. I know back in windows 98 you could search for the .pol (i think) files and just delete them, (or just press esc to bypass logon completely..great security  )is there anyway of getting around this, or is it going to be format/reinstall time?? Thanks!

Easiest thing to try is to log in as Administrator. Just stick in Administrator as the username and a blank password. You'd be surprised.

After that, you'll need to google for resetting the Administrator password.

    Try this link

    http://www.loginrecovery.com/

I used it before and it worked fine for me..you make a linux type boot disk and just follow the instructions from the website.

Dowload KnoppixSTP and use the SAM Password hash recovery tool to recover her password.

I'm not sure I'd like the idea of uploading my passwords to some website.
Better to use one of the Linux-based recovery/reset diskette options I'd say

    What could they do ?
All your browser would tell it is it's version, the version of windows you are running and your IP address. Even if they had password and made educated guesses at possible open shares / vunerabilites they would still hav[ all your base are belong to us ]

While that site may be legit can you trust them not to be hacked and ownd by some enterprising cracker, man in the middle or wha ?

IIRC C:\windows\*.pwl - named as per username

While I agree theres very little they can do with your login passwords, I still wouldnt send it out to some random website.

    http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html

This is the linux bootdisk option which is ultimatly what they would do themselves, follow the instructions and set NEW password to blank for best results.
