load up doing a step by step confirmation
if it happens when it starts to load the drivers for windows you are boloxed... reload, coz youre virtual drivers are corrupted.

stripe down the system to see if htere is interference from some device thats installed on the system

    when did it start happening?
    did you install anything?
    d/l anything from net?
when did it last work and what were you doing?

format and install win 98 smile.gif

    Woah Woah Woah!
    Slow down there!

[1]. Figure out what module is screwing up on you... (blah.vxd or whatever)
Start windows logged (bootlog.txt), after the system crashes, boot into DOS and have a look through bootlog.txt using the MSDOS-Editor, once you find out what file it is...

[2]. While in DOS, go to your Windows CD, go to the Win95 or Win98 folder and use the extract.exe command line proggie to replace the screwy file with the original file, located in the original 'cab's...

For help on how to use extract.exe, type...
    "extract /?"

To extract the file (blah.vxd) type...
    "extract /a /e /l C:\windows\system base4.cab blah.vxd"
Just replace blah.vxd with the file that you want to restore.
Just make sure you know where the file is supposed to be (eg. C:\windows\system\iosubsys)

Ok, that's may seem a bit complicated if you don't know DOS, but it's far quicker than reinstalling your whole operating system!

i got called in because the machine would boot but didn't load windows at all.
it looked as though the MBR was gone and it would only boot from a floppy when it was told that the floppy was the primary drive...
ne way i did a reinstall of windows and the install went fine
i'll try again and make sure to over write all the files this time smile.gif

    Yeah, those pr!cks...
The only thing that gets me by is taking the pi$$ out of them.
Asking them stupid questions like, "...so did you try turning it on?".
I always get a kick out of their response!

    See what ya' do is...
Put them on hold for about 5-mins, then press the release botton.
This will work fine, as by the time you've cut them off, they've probably gone off for a pi$$ or something.

Just put everyone on hold for a few minutes at a time... don't give a reason, just put 'em on hold, now sit back and think up 10 disturbing ways to kill them.

Format c:\ /s/q ensures a clean boot every time. Be ready with "YOU DON'T HAVE A BACKUP ?" when they realise what you have just told them to do.
The great thing about tech support is the ppl you deal with don't have a clue so you can tell them anything and they have no choice but to take it.

Token Ring ???????? Ha, ha, ha, ha,ha.
    ha.
"Inserting into ring..." I near pi$$ed meself the first time I saw this on a DOS boot.

Admins: consult your nearest dictionary to confirm that pi$$ is a valid non-swear word.
