I don't know what 2fm were thinking putting this ass in the breakfast time slot, he really rankles me.

Anyway I have a question about the listenership figures, I know I for one, as soon as I heard his stupid voice retuned my radio immediately. But I was wondering if there were any figures that anyone could point to as to whether their overall listenership figures dropped as a result of this masterstroke of a move by RTÉ?

    Anyone?

The JNLR wont be out for another while yet, but the last one showed an overall drop in listenership of around 2%... and 2fm were hit by same.
The surge of mp3 players and podcasting is going to give radio listenership figures a run for its money.

Wasn't it that the listenership dropped quite a bit when it went from being Tubriddy to Ruth Scott and Rick O Shea?

Personally, I think Scott is dire and shouldn't be on radio at all, while Rick O Shea would have done infinately better on that show on his own... Marty's just a damn joke.

Dont particularly listen to much radio, but i ALWAYS listen to Jerry Ryan in the mornings and usually Spin 103.8 after that - at least its modern!!!
Larry Gogan is a joke, every time he is on he skips cd's, forgets names of songs etc etc like anything!

Careful now, you're starting to veer into offtopicville here, and since I started the thread I would be most upset to see that happen.

This is a thread about Marty Whelan and the breakfast time slot on 2fm, just in case any of you are confused.

Please see whiskeyman & moridin's posts for examples of on topic discussion.

    That is all.

Gerry Ryan and Marty Whelan should be taken out, de-balled, tarred, feather, electrocuted, drawn, broken on the wheel, set alight and their ashes out in a food processor, put the lot in a cannister and shove it up Larry Gogans arse....

Meh, he's better than Tubridy. Rick and Ruth were the best to be honest.

Sorry if I offended you Mossy, I had no idea you had such delicate sensibilities.

I dare to offend you once more, and apologise in advance for any future angst I may cause, but your first post in this thread was neither about marty whelan nor the breakfast time slot on 2fm. In fact it could only vaguely have been linked to 2fm at all.

Once again I apologise for any offence this may have caused, and inasmuch a completely over the top response is not called for.

Well we're all entitled to our opinions (even if they are wrong ;)).

His show is on from 7 until 9 I believe, never listened to it, so I could be wrong.

The ads for his shows are really awful and I thought there was no way that the show itself could be as bad as its ads are, I was wrong really, really wrong. Had to listen to it there last week, worst two hours of radio I've ever heard and thats saying something living in this country.

In my opnion they should put Tubirdy back on his old show and stick Marty on RTE1 from 9.

RTE should hang Tubridy, problem solved all together.

Nah, can't stand Whelan myself either, he's just not suited to 2fm. Thankfully, I can pick up BBC Radio 1 on my way to work, so it's Chris Moyles for me! :)

Don't know now, his brand of 80's dj is perfect for those no-brainer mornings, he made a link the other morning that nearly made me crash the car, he says to the girl in the studio, having just done the weather/traffic report or something and says "You know how it started" and went straight to "It Started With A Kiss" by Hot Chocolate, soo cheesy yet made me laugh and I ended up listening to the song. Although not sure if its laughing with him or at him, still at least everyone has the choice to listen to 2fm or not in the am, not like the latter years of the 80's when they shut all the pirates down and all we in school had was 2fm, shudder shudder, poperama, thats POPerAma not POPErama, we're were good catholics then, but not that good.
If you don't like Marty turn him off, if you do, leave him on, leave his TV persona out and see if his banter and playlist appeal, got to be better than the crap on spin and 98fm, me I listen to Newstalk, but then I am the enemy, over 30 and all that.

    it's Chris Moyles for me!

Disturbing. One radio presenter who makes Marty Whelan an appealing choice...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 385 ✭✭radioman

The whole 2fm schedule at the moment is seriously out of touch with reality. Marty should never have been brought back, that Damien Farrelly guy must be the thickest man on radio, and Ruth Scott is incredibly annoying. Gerry Ryan and Dave Fanning are probably the only shows keeping that station going

First time I heard Marty on in the morning I honestly thought he was going to have a heart attack he was trying to act all hyper and enthuasiastic the way tubridy naturally was but he just couldn't pull it off, and his choice of music is truly outdated...why did they let tubridy go why?!

Appartanly Gerry Ryan was responsible for Rick & Ruth getting the boot from the breackfast show. He was worried that with the younger listenership listening to them, they were then switching over to Ray Darcy once that show finished. It was having a bad effect on his lisenership. There was a piece in the times a couple of weeks ago about this.

I actually just presumed it was cause Ruth and Rick didn't get along, they always seemed to be talking over each other and Rick always seemed bored by Ruth's "funny and interesting" stories. Well that just proves Jerry Ryan has power!!

The day Marty started was the day I discovered the Strawberry Alarm Clock. Colm and Jim Jim are damn funny blokes, seem very genuine and down to earth to me.

Marty Whelan should have been left in the 80's, its still 1989 in his head.

Ok, let me quote dustin the turkey..."I sleep in every morning because my radio alarm is put to Marty Whelan.." ( or something like that). One word. Why?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 771 ✭✭✭spiderlegs

Well I couldn't believe my ears on thursday morning,Marty palyed the Coral....I'm starting to think someone else is now choosing the music...if Marty continues to improve like this I may actually not convert to another radio station...

    marty plays okay stuff sometimes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 385 ✭✭JayeL

Marty is there in a vain attempt to boost listenership what what 2fm perceive as a sure thing i.e. they'll get listeners, just not in the demographic they might have preferred. Today FM took a risk with Ray D'Arcy and he's built up a following.

Ryan Tubridy, despite his cosy Montrose-ite, local-to-RTE existence since the age of 12, has to be (grudgingly) admired for taking a brand-new idea on 2fm and making it work against all odds.

Marty Whelan.....well, Marty needs to be put to sleep.

Must be why they're the No. 1 breakfast show in Dublin so......

Marty Whelen is pretty bad but down here is Cork - Nick Richards is pretty dire.

    2fm needs a purpose.

If you have the option of listening to Chris Moyles on Radio 1 but would rather listen to Marty Whelan, why don't you go the whole hog and listen to Wogan on Radio 2 if that suits you.

I think all posts should begin with the words "I think" :)

I also think there is a gap in the Irish radio market. JimmyK, you hit the nail right on the head - Marty is an Irish Terry Wogan, but he has no real place on 2FM. And Radio 1 is a bit of a joke these days, Morning Ireland begins at 7am!!!! Sure people are still commuting then but who sets their alarm as late as 7am these day? Maxi is also a talent but that show does not belong on a Radio 1 station in the 6-7am slot.

There is no "Radio 2" style station for the Martys and the Maxis of this island, so they are shoved into places they don't really belong. Marty had his home on Century, he was soo funny there with his co-presenter.
