This thread is gonna be soooooo locked...

unless you already OWN the movie that is...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,722 ✭✭✭maidhc

    1) If it is "locked" it is most likely a geniune DVD, thus Hollywood got their taxes
    2) Watching a film on a PSP isn't illegal
    3) Google is your friend

Won't be locked until someone actually tells you how. Then the solution will be deleted and locked.

    Indeed google is your friend.

IANAL, but AFAIK copyright law only covers distribution, public performance and making derived works. Format shifting to a PSP isn't there. Though it can be a grey area and mods can (and do) lock these kinds of threads, so vannistelrooy10, you could just tell us about your American cousin who has sent you lots of home films burnt onto DVDs. You really want to watch them on your new PSP, and then ask how to copy them. ;)

Why is it always an american cousin? Whats wrong with a cousin from Kerry (aside from the fact anyone from kerry is obviously in some way stupider than us Dubs :P).

And as for the post above... i'm just saying this because i always wanted to use this legitimately. Don't take offense.

Hmmmm, not sure about this one....We do allow discussion on how to backup movies that you own. Don't see that this is much different. I will consult the other mods. Locking temporarily.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

Ok, the consensus is that it's ok, once you own the film, so I've reopened the thread. Even a hint of "where do I download" and it'll be closed. :)

Perhaps; http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=DVD_Decrypter may be of use? Iv used it to rip some movies I own and never had any problems.

    Handy enough tool!

or use AnyDVD, it is a licence software, you pay a little for it! providing that you own the DVD, and use licence software to make backup, completely legal then!

with AnyDVD running on the background, any dvd you insert will not be locked and you can just drag and drop it to the HDD!

You can buy the software in the local game store to convert DVDs to PSP memory stick format. There is also a free one http://www.pspvideo9.com/

Of course you do have to be the legal owner of the DVD and it shouldn't be shown on more then one device at any given time.

Use DVDecrypter to get the vob file. Make sure you turn off file splitting. Google for tutorials on this.

Then use PSPVideo9 to convert the .vob file. Takes about an hour or so, depending on your PC.

    Links:

DVDecrypter : Not sure. Use google.
    PSPVideo9: www.pspvideo9.com (current version 1.73)

Total Cost: €0. Can't get a better price than that! :)

DVD Decrypter got shut down. www.doom9.org may have a good alternative

Do you have any clue what you are talking about? Just because you have to pay the makers of AnyDVD a license fee it does not cover you legally against copyright infringement. (which in many juristictions exactly what copying or backing up a DVD is) It just means you were stupid enough to buy a program that can help you infringe against copyright when there are loads of free ones out there.

Very few countries have 'fair use' enshrined in law. (ie buying 1 copy enables you to do anything to like with that copy provided its for personal and non-commerical use)

Ignore his advice - try the free ones first - then if they dont work try AnyDVD.
Plus AnyDVD has macrovision disable - which is definately dodgy in certain countries.

(personally I would strongly be in favour of fair use - but just because I would like fair use to be enshrined in law - doesnt mean it is.)

DVD Decrypter latest/final version is still good and still works. Its also still available to download, just give Google a call on www.google.ie ^_^

secret_squirrel; hard to say but he may not be saying that using the free software is illegal. To be honest, either he thinks that using the licence software means copyright laws dont apply (which they still do, as you said) or that its a more legal way of copying the copyrighted DVD's. But ya, your suggestion about trying the free ones first is a good idea. Why pay for something if you can get it for free?! :)

AnyDVD and something like CloneDVD to convert to a .iso
    both programs are the business

dvdshrink to create the iso and dvd decrypter to burn (using nero). Both free progs. Have used these two plenty of times and yet to have a coaster. The progs and guides can be gotten from the following site:

As Sully04 said - I may have misinterpreted your post due to the dodgy english/grammar.

However whether you own the DVD or not - it is still copyright infringement afaik in this country.

Im 99% sure that the concept of Fair Use (using copyrighted works in multiple formats from 1 original) isnt enshrined in the law of Ireland and therefore is possibly (probably?) illegal and a definate grey area.

Im not trying to be holier than thou here - just making sure people know exactly what they are doing.

In these days of DRM and shíte our freedom to do what we like with music/films/books we own is getting less and less.

Does Ireland (or the UK) have something similar to the DMCA where it is illegal to defeat encryption on any software or copyright work?

You can put videos on any version PSP. 2.0 versions support MP4 and H .264 while sub 1.52 is MP4 only.

There is already software out to downgrade from 2.0 to 1.5.

    Ish.

A law has been passed in the EU which means member states have to implement something similar to the DMCA. I don't know if Ireland has done it yet (last update I heard about it was a year or two ago, and we hadn't done it by then). AFAIK Ireland is frequently late in implementing EU laws.

Each member state has some leeway in implenting the law, so it could be possible for there to be an exception for home media shifting or something similar.

Basically the whole thing is a massive grey area. And if you get sued by a film company they have boat loads of money, so you're probably screwed either way. Ah the modern justice system....

I know nothing about the law, but I'm going to bet Ireland has laws to allow fair usage.

If I remember correctly Skysoft, the makers of CloneDVD, AnyDVD & CloneCD started off in Austria or Germany but had issues regarding the laws goverening copyright of CD/DVD's & backing them up, since then they have moved to Mallow in Cork.

I'm just guessing but I'm sure theirs a reason they moved to Ireland :)
