motherboard problem

The motherboard on my PC has to be replaced. It is a Windows XP PC.

Can this be done a)without losing the data on my hard drive or b) without losing the installed applications/software.
Alternately can the hard drive be installed on a new PC without losing data and installed programs.

Im told that I will lose the installed stuff but not the data. This would be by doing a repair windows XP install and getting a new activation code.

If a motherboard is just a circuitboard and all the chips/cards are replaced onto the new board surely all the installed programs would be unaffected.??

Any advice on a good repair shop in Dublin who can do this properly?

    TIA

Is the new motherboard the exact same as the one being replaced? If so, then yes you should be able to get away with a straight swop.
If however you are putting in a different motherboard then you will need to reinstall windows. If all your information, aka windows and other data, is all on the same hard drive without a partition then you will lose than information when you reinstall. If you partitioned windows, then you can just reinstall that. Your data should be safe.
If you installed programs into a partition seperate from windows, there is a 50/50 chance that they might work. However it is better to reinstall them.

Replacing the MoBo shouldn't cause you to lose any data. Actually, Windows should indentify all the new hardware and update the configuration automatically. You may have to re-register XP, but that's likely to be the extent of it.

If you really have to reinstall windows, your data won't be affected. By "data" I mean your Word/Excel/Whatever files which will still be on your disk. If you have to reinstall windows, you'll probably have to reinstall all other software too. But your data will still be OK.

My current machine is running on the same XP as when it started a few years ago, but it's gone through 2 changes of motherboard, 1 new sound card, a new graphics card, a DVD writer, 2 disks, etc. and the only time I had any data integrity problems was last weekend when I lost the partition table on a 250GB disk (thank goodness for Linux and DFSEE). Never any problems when changing hardware.
